New growth causing some pain...

So I used to throw my hair up into a high bun to protect it which didn't bother me last time I grew it out; but did stretch it out too much. But now my new growth is a tighter curl and is causing pain in the roots when I put it up. Has anyone else experienced this? It's just totally different, even in the shower it stays textured where my damaged hair goes straight when wet and conditioned. Should I just keep it down as much as possible?
