I can't believe this thread hasn't been activated yet... but what are your favourite products for fine hair?

Currently I am using basically the whole MopTop line but would love to hear about what everyone else is using.

Thanks for getting us started! A lot of fine-haired curlies like Aveda Be Curly, and I've also heard that Kevin Murphy products work well.... but they're pricey.

I absolutely love the Alaffia original line shampoo and conditioner in my signature line. The summertime products, Alaffia Coffee and Shea Revitalizing Shampoo and Conditioner, are designed for fine hair. I only switch products in cooler months because I need more moisture. However, I'm thinking about sticking with the shampoo and using the Alaffia Everyday Coconut Ultrahydrating Conditioner with it because it is kind of similar to the coffee one in its effect, but more moisturizing.

I am still working out my styling products.
Low-poo: Alaffia Coffee & Shea Revitalizing Shampoo for Fine/Thin Hair (summer), Alaffia Coconut & Shea Hydrating Shampoo
    Clarify: Kinky Curly Come Clean
Rinse-out: Alaffia Coffee & Shea Revitalizing Conditioner for Fine/Thin Hair (summer), Alaffia Everyday Coconut Ultra Hydrating Conditioner
DT: Camille Rose Naturals Algae Renew Deep Conditioner
    Leave-in: As I Am Leave-in
Styler: Lily of the Desert 99% Aloe Vera Gelly
Treatment: Daily tea spray; Coconut oil overnight treatment; Citric acid rinse for hard water; 2-step Henndigo w/ amla to cover gray

I haven't heard of that line! Worth a shot if I can get it in Canada. We have a serious product access problem! Lol

@Savagegirl : Alaffia is available on Canadian Amazon, but it costs more (even on US Amazon) because they include shipping charge in the price. You can try iherb.com or luckyvitamin.com and see if the shipping promos (free shipping over a certain amount) they have help you with price. You can also order direct from alaffia.com, but again I'm not sure how the pricing/shipping/exchange works out for you.

I do think Alaffia is such a great company that their products at least deserve a try. You can read more about them at on their website at: Alaffia Mission.

I use Living Proof.  I rotate between the Restore and the No Frizz line.   I know they are generally considered pricey, but I keep an eye out for sales at Ulta & Sephora.  On Black Friday I was able to get 2 shampoos & conditioners for the price of 1.  Ulta also will have the giant bottles on sale 1 or 2 times a year.

I have also noticed that my hair does stay cleaner longer with their products, so I don't need to wash as often, plus a little goes a long way.

Yes - that's the one. It costs a little more on Amazon than luckyvitamin.com and iherb.com because they include the shipping cost in the cost of the product. In contrast the other online retailers also offer discounted pricing, so if you are ordering other things, spreading the shipping if you even end up paying it brings the price down.

ETA: I just realized I keep repeating myself about the shipping and iherb and luckyvitamin. Sorry 'bout that. I just like to save a buck! :)

My very favorite product to give my hair extra lift and volume is  Yarok Feed Your Do Styling Whip (more like a paste). It's pricey compared to what I usually spend on hair products but it take just a dab so it lasts a long time.

I am searching around the forum looking for a leave-in that won't weigh my hair down.

When I have some frizz I rub a barely there amount of coconut oil in my palms and lightly run it over the top of my hair. This can sometimes be too much for me.

@ellaj have you tried Devacurl's wavemaker? I just started a tube and am seeing good things so far. It is very light but effective.

@ellaj: Another way I've heard of fixing frizz is to take a tiny bit of your conditioner and rub it between your palms until it is pasty. Then try applying it to your hair.

You could also try using a little bit of shea butter instead of coconut oil. Since shea butter is a dry oil, it might not weigh down your hair as bad.

Many thanks for the recommendations @Savagegirl, @bomega and @Therese1. :) I appreciate you all taking the time to help me out.

What I have been doing is paying close attention to what other fine/wavies list in their signatures. Deva, Curl Junkie and Shea Moisture are some of the brands that keep popping up.

Therese1, I am going to try your tip and use a conditioner rather than coconut oil to help with the frizz.

I am very close to going with the Devacurl's wavemaker.

@Savagegirl : I noticed on another thread about Holy Grails that you "Disagree"ed with my post. I take your disagreement was related to my Alaffia rec? Perhaps it didn't work for you?

No, it was abour needing sulfates to remove cones. There are clarifying shampoos that are sulfate free and remove just about everyhing

That's a little confusing since I didn't say she *had to* use a sulfate, but rather that she *could* use a sulfate for clarifying silicones. I usually start with that since it is easy and cheap to get a sulfate on the ground. I went on to suggest KKCC (non-sulfate) and B&B Sunday (a salon sulfate), for additional options. I live in a small town and it is very difficult to even find a low poo, much less a sulfate-free clarifier (my grocery store brought in Giovanni and Nature's Gate and it was completely radical for them to do it.) Sulfates are just easy to find, and will clarify a cone.

But I'm not bent about it. I was worried you were disappointed at your Alaffia Revitalizing Shampoo experiment at my expense. I want to start wit the usual boilerplate of YMMV. Then, if it doesn't work out, consider hanging on to it until summer if it doesn't work out now. Finally, if it still doesn't work when the weather is helpful, you can use it as a bodywash to at least salvage the expense.

I just came across Live Clean's Weightless Volume conditioner. Holy what a great find! I just posted a review in products but this conditioner surprised the heck out of me with how well it performs. One of the best i've tried in fact, and a small fraction of the price of most of the others! Awesome!

I use LA Sports Gel over V05 Strawberry Moisture Milks on sopping wet hair, while I'm still in the shower. Then, I get a tee shirt, and I absorb most of the water moisture out of my hair. I have fine hair. I have tried not using such a strong hold gel. However, I get great curl definition with no crunch, just well-defined frizz free hair, when I use the tee shirt.

I was reading this thread and eventually registered to comment.

My hair is 2c-3a, low porosity, medium-fine, medium-low density. It is easily weighed down and prone to build-up, even if I use natural, light products. I use henna to cover a few grey hair.

Co-washing doesn't work for me. Neither does applying shampoo «on the roots only», I have to shampoo all my hair or it will look dirty and frizzy after a few washes, because of build up.

Low poo: I'm currently using a sulfate free shampoo from a local brand (I'm from Spain), which I think is too mild for me. Want to try Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion shampoo.

Clarify: Tried a sample of Shea Moisture Low Porosity Shampoo and loved it. Sulfate shampoo is Ok if I deep condition after.

Rinse out: Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Creme Rinse, I have noticed that if I leave it longer than the 1-2 minutes recommended, it weighs down my hair a bit. So I either rinse after that time, and finish detangling with a leave in conditioner, or I use the masque from the same line as a rinse out conditioner.

Deep conditioner: Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion masque, love love love it!!

Leave-in: KC Knot Today, As I am leave in conditioner, Aloe Vera gel

Styler: currently Aloe vera gel + Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Mousse.
Tried a sample of Argan Ecostyler gel, not bad. I want to try the pink one since is recommended for fine hair.
Homemade flaxseed gel: my hair took forever to dry with it, maybe I'll give it another chance in summer.

Fails: Shea Moisture curl enhancing smoothie (weighed down my hair).
Shea moisture curl gel souffle: not as heavy as the smoothie, with a very small amount my hair looked good but was weighed down the next day.
Shea Moisture Raw Shea detangler: too heavy for leaving in.

    My tricks:

    - Shampoo is your friend. When you start CG method you try cowashing, mild shampoos... but with low porosity + fine hair you HAVE TO use shampoo.

    - Avoid leave-ins and stylers with oils in them.

    - My trick for deep conditioning. Before clarifying, I apply masque and start detangling with my fingers, finish with my Tangle Teezer Thick and Curly. Then I pineapple, put on a plastic cap, then a conditioner cap, then apply heat with a hooded dryer for 10 -15 minutes. I try not leaving the masque more than 25-30 minutes so my hair is not weighed down.

    - Use a fine mist spray bottle (instead a regular spray bottle) to moisturize hair. A regular spray bottle leaves my hair too wet.

I can't stop raving about Garnier Whole Blends Legendary Olive conditioner... mild scent, leaves my hair so soft with little-to-no frizz, and my fine hair still has volume the next day!  Attaching a pic from a product test (this is the following morning).... there's zero products in my hair, literally just a low sulfate wash, followed by the conditioner, air-dried, and wrapped in a tshirt to sleep.  My new HG conditioner :) :)
2C/3A mix. Fine hair, and a ton of it.  Blonde balayage.
    Modified Canadian CG.
Wash: Garnier Whole Blends Legendary Olive, Live Clean Apple Cider Vinegar, Schwarzkopf Colour Freeze
CO: Garnier Whole Blends Legendary Olive
    LI: Living Proof Curl Memory
Styling: Garnier Fructis Pure Clean Gel, Taliah Waajid Curl Sealer, Devacurl Wave Maker
Refresh for 2nd Day: Devacurl Mist-er Right
Oil: Orofluido Original Elixir (for winter/high humidity.. not CG)

LOTS of scrunching with tshirts.. or the occasional diffusing for big beachy waves !

How do you decide whether to use gel vs cream? And just how many products should I use? I’m new to all this and the options are a bit overwhelming.
