Does DevaCurl work for high porosity protein sensitive hair?

smilingsashsmilingsash Registered Users Posts: 1 Curl Neophyte
My hair is a combination of all the type 3. My edges are 3c and the farther away it goes my hair becomes 3b with a little bit of 3a. I have very think, high porosity hair that is protein sensitive. I am trying to expand the products I use because the ones right now are doing enough especially what I use to style. I do the LOC method by using As I Am Leave-In Conditioner, then Jamaican Black Castor Oil, follow by either Cantu Curling Cream or Cantu Twist and Lock Gel. That does not give me enough hold. I am looking into DevaCurl and I know it has high reviews but their products contain so much protein and I am hesitant to spend so much money on products that do not work. Help me please!

Probably not, since all (or at least most) have protein.  I don't really have any recommendations for you, since my hair is so different than yours.  But yeah...lots of protein in Deva.

Hi there! I'm new here, so I don't know much, but I did just go to an amazing stylist. She told me that I am protein sensitive, and cannot use DevaCurl because all their products contain protein. Instead she recommended JessieCurl. Here are the products that she used on me:

    Cream Cleanser
    Too Shea Conditioner
    Deep Conditioner (as leave-in)
    Rocking Ringlets Styling Potion
    and Spiralicious Gel scrunched through.

    Hope this helps!

High porosity hair that is protein-sensitive must be a tough combination. I agree with others that you might not do well with Devacurl for all the reasons above. Jessicurl might be a good choice to try. But I wonder if your hair might do ok with silk protein, even if it is protein sensitive. Somewhere on the Sciency Hair Blog she goes into how smaller proteins like silk protein sometimes work for protein-sensitive hair (however this is not true for my protein sensitive hair). Here is the Sciency Hair Blogs Intro to Protein article though: Protein 101 - Lots of Basic Information About Using Protein in Hair Products

Off the top of my head, Shea Moisture Coconut Hibiscus line has silk protein, and so does Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner (the matching shampoo is not CG-Friendly). Raw Curls is a line that features silk protein. But there are other small proteins that aren't silk (I can't help talking about it because once in the before-times my hair used to love silk protein. :))

Hi - not all of Deva has protein, just fyi.  Most of it does, but there are at least a dozen or so cleansers and stylers that are protein free.  I am super protein sensitive and currently using several Deva products without protein. :)

@MamaJTB, which products are they? It would be helpful to have a list for people who are in the same boat. The only Deva product I have seen that has no protein is the One Condition (I think), and that has hops extract, which acts like a protein for some people's hair.

Sorry, I don’t have a list in my head anymore as I’ve currently moved on to KC for my hair.  But when I was going thru Deva, they gave me a list of protein free products and low protein products thru their online chat feature (which is super convenient and awesome if you have not tried it).  I know Arc Angel gel is protein free, as is Frizz Free Volumizing Foam, and I think Low Poo and One Condition Original, but don’t quote me on those last two.  I’m only referring to literal proteins though, and not things like hops that can act like a protein for some.  My hair seems to be okay just avoiding the obvious offenders.

A note on Arc Angel gel - it does NOT have protein, but there is apparently a batch of this product that has the wrong label on it out there in the world which suggests that it does have protein.  I got a mislabeled bottle at Ulta and contacted online chat who told me this and was adamant that Arc Angel is protein free.  I have since replaced that first bottle with the correctly labeled bottle and NO protein.  Also, to make things more confusing, it seems the NC store here on this website has stock from this mislabeled batch and the NC online description shows the wrong ingedient content with protein.  I emailed NC and they said they would look into it, but if you go to Deva’s website and check ingredients you can see the difference.

Update!  I got the list from Deva again and have posted it in its own thread. :)
