Coarse and high porosity

Hey! Let’s talk if you have coarse and high po hair. I think it is super challenging to keep moisture and definition because of the porosity, yet being mainly coarse means I wouldn’t use protein as religiously as if I were fine and high po. I try to still use protein, but not in everything I use. And using oils to seal doesn’t work as well as I would like.

hi curls 80, nice to see you here!     my hair is not coarse, it is medium and altho the porosity came back normal and the dry time says normal/medium, my grey/white hair does lose moisture rapidly, and i mean rapidly, so i'm thinking more high porosity now.
i always have to seal my hair, my hair does not react well with oils and i have tried many.  it loved spiral solutions emolience butter but she has closed her business, so i am back to jane carter nourish and shine to seal.  while it is not a wow product in my hair, it is good and does a good job.  start with a little and let that be absorbed.   i seal it after i my leave in conditioner, before any styler i might use.  depending on the weather sometimes a leave in and the jc n&s is enough.

Hey rbb! Yes, mine is both medium and coarse, but mainly coarse according to my hair analysis. I was very surprised! I wanted to like jc nourish and shine but the smell was a bit strong for me. I’ve been using curlsmith oil serum for sotc. It’s more like a butter that melts into an oil. It’s quite nice. I’ve been doing the Scott Musgrave MAP course and it has made a difference in how hydrated my hair is.

Hey Curls80 I completely empathize.  My hair is coarse and high po also and I have to be very careful about protein.  I also haven't found oils helpful.  I'm sure there are better products for me than I am using but I go through phases of being very interested in trying new products and being exhausted by it.  I'm in the exhausted phase now, and hopefully will perk up before the summer.  Freezing wind is even worse for me than high dew points.  It just blows my curls into a wicked mess.
    2/c Coarse hair med. density.
    Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....

what marsha has recommended as a hold is mixing pattern pusha and ciab in your hand, 50/50.  i've done it with various conditioner leave ins and it's a great combo.  someitmes i put in on damp hair (after i plop a few minutes) or on dry hair.  either way, i find it works well for me.

Wow a coarse hair category?? Awesome! I have been dreaming of this! I have coarse and gray hair and probably high porosity. I'm sure it's high porosity and damaged at least halfway up from the bottom tho. I'm starting to think that im not taking into account enough the fact that my hair is graying. I dye every three weeks so I think I just forget that gray hair is rougher and dryer so add that on to very coarse and high porosity, and it makes sense why my hair NEVER EVER feels soft. Can anyone recommend a super ridiculously hydrating conditioner for hair that is super rough feeling and a hold product with super hard hold but still leaves a softness after it's applied? It seems like nothing works to help soften or create consistent wave from root to tip. No oils, no product, no technique, no particular weather, no nothing. I'm 2 centimeters from cutting it off because the longer it gets, the more it tangles, falls out, and looks scraggly.

Mostly 2B, but ranges A-C front to back and root to tip
Low density, very coarse, high porosity
Collarbone length, gray dyed brown, dry and rough

Lo poo: Shea Moisture brand shampoo, Ion Hard Water Shampoo
Cowash: As I Am Coc Cowash
RO: GVP CB, Aussie Mega Moist, Not Your Mothers Gardenia

    Enhancer: Camille Rose Curl Maker
Deep condition: SM Deep Treat Mask
    Protein: Hask Keratin
Styler: Curl Keeper Original, Ouidad Climate Control gel, LA Looks gel

Hi!  Glad to see this here!  I have coarse, dry, high porosity hair as well.  I am 2 months into the CGM and what a nightmare it has been!  :)  I have so many products I could open my own store.  If I use the wrong one or skip a DC, my hair seriously feels like hay and is a tangled rough mess.  I have to deep condition every time I wash my hair (twice a week right now)  If you dread the double shower, I highly recommend a hand held shower head - saves a lot of time and effort.  I also need to add olive oil and honey to my deep conditioners (especially with Shea Moisture for some reason) to help with slip, detangling and frizz.  If I don't leave it on for at least an hour with my Hot Head it makes no difference at all.  I also have to use a hard hold gel (BTZ Badda Bing is the only thing to give me crunch and is soft after I C2S)  to control the frizz but I am still experimenting with the other products to see what works best (I use the LECG method).  Oils are also great but I didn't really notice a difference right away - it took consistently using them.  I massage my scalp with a mixture of JBCO, almond oil and jojoba oil and put coconut oil on the rest of my hair as a pre-poo.  If anyone has good ideas for products I would love to hear them!  This process is exhausting and frustrating. I long for the days of running my fingers through my straightened hair

Hi, friends! I just had a hair analysis done and was shocked to learn I was coarse/high porosity--my hair takes *hours* to air-dry and I always thought it was more on the fine side! The measurements totally surprised me, but the suggestions for taking care of my hair are already having huge results. NO WONDER nothing was working!

I'm finding olive oil works really well as a sealer for me. Seems like the more of it I use, the better--I'll be interested to see what happens with that, since I was afraid of oils weighing down my hair before.

Up to now, I've used protein in almost everything (mostly unintentionally, really), but I've found that my hair always seems limp and blah, so I just assumed I needed more and kept adding to it. Part of my analysis mentioned that protein overload sometimes manifests as limp, overly soft hair, rather than brittle--doh! I think I've been overloading it. So I'm trying to find more products without protein, as well, so I can be more intentional about using it.
