Braids as long term protective style?

Hi
My last relaxer was in 2014 and I think it's finally time for me to cut my hair. I was curious so I cut a section of my hair just to see what it looks like without the damaged ends. It shrinks soooo much and looked super short and I am not ready for that. I was wondering if I wearing braids for like a year (on and off, obviously) would help me retain length quicker after I cut it and get me out of the TWA stage ASAP.

Is there anyone who did this? What was your experience?

I don't know about quicker but it is an option if you just don't want to wear the short hair. A year of great retention would give you a good 6 extra inches of hair but with textured hair you may not SEE that full 6 inches. My husband is shoulder length but his hair shrinks to a super short TWA. On the other hand I have a tighter curl pattern than him but my hair doesn't shrink nearly as dramatically.
