Stylists - what do you recommend for low density wavies?

ttoosdayttoosday Registered Users Posts: 509 Curl Connoisseur
I hear and read everywhere that long layers are recommended for curlies and wavies to avoid triangle head.

I had long subtle layers cut into my shoulder length low density waves, several months back. My shortest of the layers ended up about mid-ear when I flipped my hair over to a side part. The lower portions of my hair grow faster than my canopy I guess cuz it seems like there's now several inches difference between my shortest layer, now getting to chin length, and my longest hair which is almost armpit length. Or maybe that's about the same growth rate I'm not sure.

Anyway, I feel like the layers thinned out my already low density hair and so I haven't went for a cut in 6 months or more. I'm now wishing I'd never had those long layers cut. But my stylist ensured me I really did need layers and I'd prob be so much happier with them so I took a chance. I guess it was ok in that length at that time but now, I'm not sure what to do. So I'm just letting it grow as is, scraggly and thinned out in the longest sections.

Are layers recommended for low density hair, especially if one is trying to grow their hair long? What other options are there?

Thanks!

the back bottom of my hair is a different curl pattern, 2c rather than 3a or 3b curls, so it grows faster. since i only go for cuts once every 6 months, my stylist knows that i cut the back bottom of my hair every few months. since it is a looser pattern, it grows much faster.
maybe this is what you have??

Seems like the same situation maybe. I could have my stylist cut my length up slowly to meet my layers as they grow. But then I am still not sure if I need layers. :/

you do want layers to avoid triangle hair and to lighten it up.
given the length of your hair it sounds to me as tho the top layers are too short. if they were longer you'd have more hair in that section, if that makes sense.
so maybe let him just cut the bottom and tell him that going forward you want the top layers longer (and, it's important to say that each time you go as they have so many clients they forget, so it is on us. if you find that is what works for you).

Layers are tricky with wavy hair, I think. My stylist decided to put long layers in my hair at my last appointment, and the result looked awful. The bottom layer just hung there, and the layers did not blend at all. They looked like shelves.

I went back in and had her trim the bottom layer to be much closer to the next-to-bottom layer, and that helped tremendously (but I lost 1.5 inches in the process). So I can only assume that short layers (less distance between layers) is required, at least for wavy hair.

As this haircut grows out, I'm finding that my hair actually looks better with a little more bulk at the bottom from the two layers being closer together. A little bit of "triangle head" looks good on me and gives me some volume. But I have very fine hair; your hair might respond differently.

Hmm yea, I agree, its tricky for wavies. Just like everything else is tricky for wavies. Plus factor in that I have never had long hair before, so I really have no idea what Im doing. I have a feeling it looks terrible on me, like elongates my face, but I dunno, I guess Im hoping I can get to waist length and then magically it will look awesome.

I'm in the same boat. My hair is a couple of inches past my shoulders, which is the longest it's ever been. It seems that as the hair gets longer, the curls wrap around themselves, which changes how the hair lies.

I'm getting a haircut with a new stylist in a couple of weeks. She is Ouidad trained. I like to straighten my hair sometimes and so didn't want a Deva cut, since I think that Deva cuts don't straighten well. I think that the Ouidad method is supposed to help avoid the curls wrapping around each other, so that all the curls can be visible. We'll see.

I do think that sometimes the hair can be at an in-between length that is not flattering for a person's body proportions, which is why I will probably continue to grow mine out, to see if the proportions improve. So I think it's worth continuing to see what happens.

i agree with therese -- that sometimes hair can get into an in-between stage that does not work for your face or body type.

I do intend to just keep growing. I got a compliment on my hair this past weekend. The very first ever legitimate out of the blue from a stranger "oh I love your hair" compliment. I suspect that its because its finally getting some length to it. And perhaps that one person was a weirdo.

But anyway, the shortest layer is definitely in the worst length for my liking. Its a long uncomfortable road from chin length to armpit for me.

Therese - good luck with your new cut!
