curl cream question(s)

MyrnaMyrna Posts: 2,472Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I feel kinda stupid asking these questions but here goes. I have never used a curl cream..successfully. But because I still struggle with my hair, I wonder if I should re-consider..What exactly does a curl cream do? How do you use yours and which one(s)? do you use it alone or layer? Just talk to me.

I don't use them either but know plenty of other curlies who do. It seems that they have thicker width hair for the most part, and it helps define their hair. Doesn't usually provide much hold. As a baby fine haired curly (sometimes wavy), I find that I don't have much luck with them either. All product seems to do is weigh down my hair and pull out curl, and gel makes it bend weirdly. My hair is happier with less it seems. We may be similar in that regard.

Edit: This is O/T, but does my avatar appear as a question mark for other people on here, or is it just my computer?

    3A/f/i
Super baby fine hair, low porosity
Shampoos: SM Fruit Fusion (mostly), Avalon lemon (to clarify). Occasional aloe vera and glycerin to wash.
Stylers: Intelligent Nutrients Perfect Hold Hairspray
Treatments: Catnip tea, IA girl's PT, Fermented Rice Water, Catnip Tea, Amla tea, Irish Moss, SS PT

I used to use Aveda Be Curly Curl Enhancer which is a cream. Don't know why I stopped using it because I liked it and prefer a cream. When I used it it I would cleanse and condition then cotton tee shirt dry my hair then I would apply the Aveda curl cream by raking it through. Then I would squeeze it in. Didn't provide much hold or any hold but I used it as a styler. Even Aveda Be Curly 'gel' don't provide much hold but I find that Aveda Be Curly products do provide a lot of moisture. The curl cream definitely provided moisture and helped with styling and sealing. A little of the Aveda goes a long way.

Naturecat, your avatar is a small graphic that usually comes in place of icons or images in emails where images are not automatically downloaded, before you right click and tell it to download images.

I don't know if I use them the right way, but this is the only way I can use them without a complete hair fail. My hair is extremely fine, low porosity, and ranges from 2A to 3A/B. I have a problem with almost everything weighing down my hair. So I use just a tiny dab (pea-sized) of curl cream instead of a leave in conditioner. I like to rake it through my hair, then comb (not for detangling, just to make it look neat and create a part), then I add a pretty good glop of gel on top, squished in. The ones I have seem to be moisturizing, plus it encourages the curl more than just a conditioner leave in. And it adds a bit of shininess as well. I cycle between Bantu curl cream (smells devine! and leaves my hair so so shiny!), AG Re:Coil, KCKT, and B'Leave In (although I use more of that then the others). Not all of those are specifically curl creams, but they all seem to act about the same in my hair.

It sounds like you gals are using a curl cream for moisture, kind of like a leave in?

My intended use isn't for moisture but for styling but it provided moisture. If you're looking for hold then I think curl cream might not be for you. I've been using gel recently and I don't like gel, I prefer a curl cream or even a mouse live Deva fizz free volumizing mouse. I'm not looking for hold, I'm looking to seal in some moisture.

As for using them as leave ins, I'd say it would be depend on the cream. For example I tried Cantu Coconut Curling Cream a couple different ways besides as a curling cream and I hated it. It did not work for deep conditioning, it did not work for a leave in other than to leave it in as a curl definer and moisturizer. After that experience, I doubt Ill try to use a curl cream as a leave in again. But I don't think I could make a blanket statement that curl dreams can't be used successfully as a leave in.

I do, but only because my hair can tolerate only 2 leave-in products at a time. So I have a choice of conditioner + gel, or mousse + gel, or curl enhancer + gel. So if one of those leave in products is also moisturizing, it's extra good for me.

Naturecat, on my mac it is showing up as a question mark. I've seen that happen with other things - I wonder what causes that.

I have used curl creams for years. I don't know why or I actually I can't pin point the reason or benefits but I've found that it works best if you mix it with water either on the same bottle or before applying put some on your hand and add water then apply it.
I've used many brands, the one I'm using at the moment is Kativa (Peruvian brand) which is quite ok.
It maybe a habit but what I've found from using them, is that they give you definition reduce frizz and gives you a product free look, leaving your hair with movement and soft to touch. At the moment due to the cold and dry weather I can't use only that, so I use a gel, diffuse and put a bit curl cream to reduce frizz after diffusing.
For most of the times, using only the cream was enough, it won't give you as much definition as a gel or mousse but it wont let your hair to puff and frizz up.
    2c, dense and coarse hair.
