Stuck in a serious hair rut...UPDATE

JayneeJaynee Posts: 2,039Registered Users Curl Neophyte
Ahh my hair is driving me crazy! I have 2/3a hair a couple inches below my shoulders, my routine has been the same for probably a year now, and I'm kind of stuck. Here are two pics of my hair at the moment...keep in mind that this is the end of a long day and I'm not having the best hair day...also, it's hard to take pics of my own hair!

I am getting my hair cut next week and I'm going to go right at shoulder length, about 1-2 inches off. I also am going to ask her about doing some color or highlights. However, I am in need of a new routine. Here is mine right now:

Wash with Suave Lavendar shampoo every few days
Suave Naturals conditioner (no cones)
I flip my head over right before I shut the shower off, condition, comb, rinse, get out of the shower
I keep my head upside down and scrunch/blot with a t-shirt, apply mousse/gel (no cones), scrunch once more with the tshirt, and flip my head back over
I then put a little more product on the back of my hair and other spots I tend to miss, and air dry.

I have found that I need to do the upside down thing in order to get any kind of curl at the first couple inches of my hair, but does anyone have any suggestions to update/improve on what I'm doing? Sorry for the long post!!![/img]

Your hair is gorgeous! I couldn't suggest a thing, because I want hair like yours!!!
Sometimes when I get bored or frustrated with my hair, I pull it back into a small clip or use a headband.
But really, your hair is GREAT!

Ditto here, too. I think it looks lovely!

We have VERY similar hair... your hair in those pics could practically be mine, except mine's a bit more tightly curled. So maybe our hair would like the same things?

I get lots of curl boosting from Herbal Essences Body Envy gel, L'Oreal Tightly Wound spray gel, and I use AG Cosmetics [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Recoil-p-24.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-recoil-curl-activator]re:coil[/buylink] under EVERYTHING. Also, I've just started diffusing for a few minutes with a finger diffuser when my hair is nearly dry. I'll get out of the shower, put on my [buylink=http://www.curlmart.com/AG-Recoil-p-24.html?utm_source=naturallycurly.com&utm_medium=text-link&utm_content=curltalk-post-text&utm_campaign=ag-hair-cosmetics-recoil-curl-activator]re:coil[/buylink] and gel of the day, and air dry as normal for at least an hour. When my hair is dry enough to scrunch out the crunch, I'll spray some Tightly Wound onto my hands, scrunch in to reduce crunchiness, and then diffuse in sections for 1 minute each (cool temp), sometimes repeating sections if necessary. Then, after it's 99% dry, I scrunch a bit more with my clean hands. I find that gives me a lot more curl where it would normally just be wavy.

I know how it feels to be in a rut, but your hair looks great. Maybe just play with your products, and you might find something that works a bit better!

Your curls are not only absolutely gorgeous, but your hair looks terrificly (is that a word?) healthy and shiny! Whatever you're doing is working just fine. If that's your hair at the end of the day, you must knock their socks off at the beginning of the day!

When you use shampoo, do you wash the hair too?

Awww you guys are so nice! I honestly wasn't expecting that response to my hair! I mostly just use Tresemme Flawless Curls Curl Enhancing Mousse. That's my main staple, but I also sometimes use Volumaxx gel (sp?) from Sally's that I've had for a few years. As for shampooing, I just shampoo my scalp and let the shampoo run down the length of my hair, I don't purposely wash the length. I will try to remember to post pics when I get it cut. Thanks everyone!

Your hair is beatiful. I don't think you need to change anything.

I know what you mean about being in a rut, though. Sometimes the hairstyle choices for curlies is limited. Maybe a few highlights will do the trick.

Ok so I got my hair cut last week and highlighted on Tues. So here are some new pics...I'm overall happy with it, just trying to get used to the back not curling as well, I guess because of the shorter length
