Curly 3b-3c hair changed to 4a now changing back??

Hey guys,
So I'm Eritrean and as a toddler up until the age of 11 hair was very curly/wavy, either 3b or a 3b 3c mix. I don't really know how curly hair my hair was from age 10 until 14 because my hair was cut very short. From eighth grade until the end of my junior year of high school my hair was extremely dry, and it grows in 4a with some 4b parts. It's extremely frustrating dealing with this hair because I'm not sure where it came from! I stopped cutting my hair short after freshman year and I have never cut it completely off since then. Now when I comb my hair out I notice more and more straight and extremely loose curly strands. I condition it whenever I wash my hair, use leave in, gel and sealant but my hair still appears to have springy coily hair except with more loose curly and straight flyaways!! What should I do? Cut all my hair off and see what happens? I always get a normal fade haircut and when the sides grow in the curls come in loose and bigger than the coils on the top of my head. I'm so frustrated

It could be hormonal changes that changed your curl pattern or it could be that your hair needs more moisture and you need better nutrition. A lot of 3b and 3c curlies experience dry 4b curls when hair is damaged or not cared for. If your feels really dry or wiry, it's probably your routine or nutrition. If it feels healthy and soft when you touch it, then your curl pattern has changed.

Thanks for your help! What nutritional choice can I make to make my hair grow healthier? The hair that grows closer to my natural curl pattern is soft (but not as soft as it used to be) and the hair that looks farthest from my natural pattern are coarse and feel knobbly. I used to deep condition my hair and that made it softer but didn't really change or improve my curl pattern. If it turns out to be a hormonal change, can I expect a change in my curl pattern again? (It returning back to the curl pattern I used to have or anything resembling it?)

Nutritionally, just eat a balanced diet, drink enough water, and take supplements. Some hormonal changes are just a fact of life. Some are because of stress throwing you out of balance. It sounds like you're experiencing a change in curl pattern as well as dry hair.

If you live in a humid or dry climate, make sure glycerin isn't high on the ingredients list of your products. Use a leave in. I am guessing your hair is medium or normal, so choose a mixture of proteins and humectants in products.

Hello :) I'm wondering if you might possibly have build-up? Have you used a clarifying shampoo lately? I experience a loosening in curl pattern if I havent clarified or used low-poo. When I used to only cowash, my curls got so loosened, I thought my pattern had just changed, but as soon as I used shampoo again, it was springy and super curly.

I've tried co wash vs shampoo, it seems like nothing is working so I realized I might as well purchse supplements and take them. If seems more likely to be a nutritional issue as I'm 100% sure I don't consume the proper amount of vitamins on a daily basis. My hair is naturally dry, but if it turns out to be hormonal then its fine because I'm still improving my overall health. My hair seems low porosity whch I think is another sign that it is damaged and grows damaged. When it started growing tighter was around the time I stopped taking multivitamins and I didn't hit puberty yet as well. My hair doesn't grow in a z pattern though its just a tighter s pattern. Anyways, Thanks guys and wish me luck!

Low porosity hair isn't a sign of damage. It just means your hair doesn't absorb moisture as well as more porous hair. So applying products to soaking wet hair or doing deep treatments in a steamy shower or under a dryer helps. Also, have you tried doing a modified version of the Curly Girl or Guy routine? This will probably help, but I would do one regular shampoo before beginning. I use Kinky Curly Come Clean as my nonsulfate shampoo.
