Using Mousse on type 3 Hair - Does it Work?

BeautyOGBeautyOG Posts: 383Registered Users Curl Neophyte
So I just bought mousse, wanting a styling product with less hold. But I wanted tips and feedback from other type 3's. How do use mousse? How do you use mousse for a wash n go? My hair type: 3b/MC/iii

Yes, definitely. I've seen others with type 3 hair use this. In fact I remember one woman on here who has beautiful curls, type 3B who uses just mousse, not gel. I'm more type 3 nowadays and I don't use any hard hold gel, just my own homemade jelly, mousse, and then all natural hairspray on top. Everyone's hair is different, but I've found what I prefer is wash, scrunch out water, scrunch in jelly, diffuse, a little more jelly with volume foam (all natural mousse equivalent), diffuse, hairspray. Some will use mousse on wet hair, alone with no other styling products. There's a person here (3A hair type) who uses just mousse but it's strong hold for a mousse. Yet others combine gel and mousse (some use mousse over gel, and others gel over mousse if they want more hold). The topmost layer of product tends to be what determines the hold level.

I like using mousse sometimes too. I have fine, normal porosity 3 b with some 3a curls, and what I do is, apply LI to soaking wet hair, then apply mousse the same as I would apply gel, but i have to rub my hands together really well, and the mousse ends up feeling like a cream in my hands, kind of. Then rake it in, scrunch with a T-shirt..done

I used to use mousse all of the time. On damp hair, not wet- hair that had been up in a towel for ten minutes or so. I used to use Joiwhip, and it was a nice creamy foam that gave good hold and scrunched out soft. I don't use mousse anymore (don't know why b it just stopped working for me) but it was perfect for my hair for several years actually. It was my favorite mousse in the world! Kenra has a good one too. You may also like Paul Mitchell sculpting foam.

I use mousse a bit of hairspray for my WnGs, My hair properties are in my sig. I part my hair into four sections and apply evenly. Flip my head upside down, scrunch, spray. Flip my head back up, give myself a part, spray.

I just picked up the deva volumizing foam, I used it in yesterday's wng and I was so impressed with it! The dews here in Northern Ireland are always out of this world, high humidity always. The average temp here (almost year round) is 55 F and rainy lol. I didn't use it by itself though, I used supercream and gel on top. Next wng I'm going to see if I can use it by itself. Usually what happens to me in this weather is that my hair loses curl on top and just loses volume generally, but the foam was up for the task. I didn't get glycerin bloat at all! It gave a nice lift and sort of hold at the roots too. My canopy went a little limp, but I'm still growing out all my damage so I can live with this. Let me know if you find any more good mousses! :-)
