How to actually moisturize and care for course low porosity hair?! (naturally)

Sherry.WilkeSherry.Wilke Posts: 11Registered Users
I have no idea what to do to take care of my course, LP curls. I do not use chemicals/cones/sulfates. I feel like i've tried different things, and that no matter what my hair is frizzy and won't retain moisture. I really don't want to break the bank buying/trying new products.

Currently I wash 1-2x a week with a pre poo of jojoba oil/coconut oil. Then I condition and leave in while I shave, wash, etc. then I rinse out, ACV, rinse, and apply gel. Then I plop.

I've tried oil as a sealer. I've tried deep conditioning with oil, and then sitting in the sun, I've tried an egg protein treatment, I've tried aloe treatment. I've tried washing my hair way less (but it gets smelly within a few days which I don't understand). I've tried clarifying 1-2x/month.

I'm confused about whether it's best to use NO protein products for daily/weekly care and then use protein in a deep condition instead.

Any advice would be great as I really feel like no matter what I do, it's always the same result!

Do you deep condition with just oil or do you also DC with conditioner?

Do the products you are using contain protein? Maybe you are protein sensitive.

Do you put any leave in conditioner, or a small amount of regular condish in your hair? If I dont have a L.I. in mine, its a dry, ugly mess.

Usually just oil, or aloe and green tea. Yesterday I did a avocado mask....

I sometimes leave some of my reg condish in (has protein), but still, it seems to do nothing for my hair. I've tried it on soaking wet hair, and on wrung out hair.

Hey! My conditioner does have protein, hydrolsized oats I believe... Could it make a big difference if I tried zero protein shampoo and condish? Currently both poo and condish have protein i think. However, when i do my egg treatment (1x/month) my curls seem to love it! So wouldn't that mean i'm not protein sensitive?

Thank you everyone for all your help, by the way!

That's another thing... a protein isn't just any protein. Some hair is affected by certain kinds of protein but fine with other types. I am currently experimenting with proteins but have not come up with a yes and no list yet. I figured out that some kinds make me straw like and others are ok... I am narrowing it down with time!

Such a process, this curly hair business.. :)

OP, I also have coarse LP hair, and after a couple of years trying to stick to the CG method, I've recently found that my hair needs to be shampooed very often or else products just sit on my hair instead of absorbing. This results in my hair bring frizzy, undefined, dull, and gross to the touch. I shampoo Several times a week; I'm currently trying out different shampoos to see which I prefer. Right now, I really like the Peace Rose one from Shea Moisture and the African Mint and Charcoal one. I've only recently discovered this but already I notice a difference in my hair. Regarding conditioners, I really like the Not Your Mothers Naturals conditioners. They are free of sulfates, silicones, parabens, and dyes.

I try to avoid sulfates and silicones but I am not opposed to trying them every now and then. However, I've found that my hair prefers sulfate free shampoos, and I feel more comfortable using silicone free ingredients.
I still have not mastered protein.

I have LP and I'm a minimalist. So many oils and creams my hair does not like. So I know what my hair likes and go with that.

Are there any ingredients in your routine that are drying? Even in lo poo I have found ingredients that are drying. Does your hair like steam from the shower? Also, you said you plop, the plop could be taking water from your hair.
Have you tried drying with just wet hair and no towel?
