Favorite way to get root curl?

I've been having a lot of difficulty getting root curl (it was never easy, but it's been getting worse as my hair gets longer), and I was wondering if my fellow wavies could share any tips they have on what works for them. I do clip my hair before blowdrying or air drying, but that doesn't seem to do much.

For me, when I get good root curl it's on my under layers and the sides of my face. It's rare for my canopy to be anything more than 2a wavy. But when I make sure to scrunch all over my scalp when I squish to condish and scrunch product into my roots as well, my sides and under layers will start their spiral right at the roots. If I don't take the extra care to scrunch at my scalp I don't get nearly as much root curl.
2a/2b/2c (spirals on sides and underneath, less wavy canopy), fine texture, frizzy, med porosity, low/med density, normal elasticity, colored

I started my natural hair journey a year ago. It has been a struggle! I'm a real product junkie. I've used sheamoisture, kinky curly, giovanni, jessicurl, curly hair solutions etc etc. I'm still learning...

I just started a instagram account about my journey: curlsandblondies

Just to check back in, I've had better luck with root curl lately. I started raking in my stylers so that I can get them right next to the scalp. That helped a lot. I then add water back in to make clumps, since the clumps are seriously destroyed with the raking. The other thing that helped was using the longer duckbill clips for clipping when my hair is wet. My hair is longer (past shoulder length) than it has ever been, and I need the longer clips for the extra weight.

I get more root curl when I have raw curls, so I've learned to moisturize properly so I can go without stylers
    Multicultural (Caucasian/Filipina)
    2b/2c - f - iii - low porosity - normal elasticity
Holy Grail: Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Curly Hair
I rotate through the rest of my products depending on weather and etc but usually don't need them
I try not to use products tested on animals if I can help it.

I have to choose between flat crown or crown frizz. There's pretty much not even an option for crown curl or root curl.

I started out clipping for root volume with small one inch wide claw/butterfly clips and I would really scrunch some hair up at the root and then clip it all messy. And let it dry completely. It didn't mess us the clumps, but it it did help curl some of my straighter pieces as it dried. For some reason I bought the double prong flat clips and used those for a long long time. I'm going to go back to the small butterfly clips, I think I had better results with those.

I have been an upside down styler forever. I flip upside down and scrunch, plop for a few, then diffuse or air dry. I get ok volume air drying (in the end, after I flip over and massage my scalp when my hair is dry) but not as good as when I diffuse. Upside down is key for me- I like a lot of volume! :)
3a/3b high porosity, mainly coarse, medium density
Live in Canada- hot summers, freezing winters- dry dry dry
As I am cleansing pudding, soultanicals deep condish, curlsmith cowash, lhdc condish
KCCC, curlsmith soufflé, ufdcm, mga sculpting gel
Scrunch with hair repear towel, then diffuse or air

I actually just scrunch at the roots which gives me more waves. I also plop and before securing my shirt, I gently stick my fingers and shake a little in the front at my part. Then I secure. If I don't kind of shake it, I will get this really flat, stick to my head waves. I've tried the clip method but it doesn't work for me. I just need to figure out how to get more volume just at my roots.
Curl Pattern: 2B/2C ( I think), LP, high density, coarse
    I'm experimenting with the following....
Shampoo: Mop Top gentle shampoo, Mop Top clarifying rescue treatment
    Conditioner: Mop Top Daily Conditioner
Leave in: As I am, KKKT
Gel: Kinky Curly Custard, Cantu define and shine custard
Refresher: Geranium Refresher Spray (2c distilled water+5 drops of geranium essential oil), DIY spray gel (1 T Mop Top custard + 1 oz distilled water)
