Need help with a style

machermacher Registered Users Posts: 1,031 Curl Connoisseur
I consider myself a wavy and I also think that wavy's are not in the same category per se as curly's.

Need some help with a style to tell my hair dresser. My hair is pretty much one length and it needs something cause it's starting to look more flat especially on the crown area. My waves are definitely there but maybe need more bounce is why I think I need a cut. Last time I got it cut I think he did a couple of long layers cause I told him I didn't want to go crazy and wanted to keep the l length.

Any recommendations on what to communicate to my hair dresser?

    hi, :) .
below linked thread might help with terms when asking at consultation..its from when a bunch of excellent stylists were members and posting often.

i am in arduous process of growing my curls and waves back to their full potential after being bullied a ton over past year and sacrificing most of progress. so have been trying to learn more..

Layers help but I find flatness at the crown (at least, for me) can only be helped by my going shorter all round. As for wavy/curly categories, I dunno. I walked in for my haircut a 2b, and left a 3a (again, depended on length). Shorter hair just plain bounces up more, but maybe you can keep some of the longer layers somewhat close to your current length. I thought length was what I wanted, but found that for volume it had to be either/or. My hair is clearly curlier (because it is happier and stronger and not weighed down) shorter.

    3A/f/i
Super baby fine hair, low porosity
Shampoos: SM Fruit Fusion (mostly), Avalon lemon (to clarify). Occasional aloe vera and glycerin to wash.
Stylers: Intelligent Nutrients Perfect Hold Hairspray
Treatments: Catnip tea, IA girl's PT, Fermented Rice Water, Catnip Tea, Amla tea, Irish Moss, SS PT

Don't want to go crazy with layers. When my hair is shorter it's definitely chunky wavy / curly.

Hmm. My hair is a lot longer than this pic. This pic my hair was collar length but layered . I like the chunky waves.

My hair is the opposite! Length gives me more curl (even my canopy, which is reluctant to be anything more than 2A, ever, starts to get a wave just below my ears but no shorter). I still need layers to even everything out, but they tend to be longer layers just to add shape, and for my 2C curls to show.

    Hair is so weird!
    2a canopy, 2c/3a everywhere else

My hair is just as wavy when it's past my shoulder and pretty close to one length.

The thing I don't like especially about Deva style cuts is they are all the same. My wife calls the Deva cut a 'bob'.

My hair is pretty wavy but not curly and the 'bob' doesn't look good for my wavy hair. This time around I got a lot cut off to a little above shoulder and got some layers and it looks much better.

My hair is still long for being a guy but I think it's short lol.

Macher, your hair does look bouncier, more defined, and healthier shorter.

Joonlily, I used to think my hair got curlier with length, til I got it cut short. Though like you, I have pieces where if they're too short the curl pattern won't show. It's definitely a learning process, where the ideal length is (and where the ideal length is for each single curl!).

Mine's the same. The shorter it gets the looser the wave. The longer it gets the tighter the curl and even curl at the roots which I never have if it's really short.
