Fairy knots?

Hi everyone!
My hair is currently the longest it's ever been and I'm liking it -- but since it's now long, I've been dealing with more tangles, particularly fairy knots/one strand knots. Is this something you think will go away if I get a trim (which I need to do anyway), or is this something that you always kind of have to struggle with when your hair gets longer?
I'm 2c and have very thick, coarse hair, if that makes any difference!
