? on Clarifying

On so many blogs and forums, I've seen where curlies use ACV, citric acid, and lemon juice as a "clarifier." If all of those close the cuticles via lowering the ph, how could it be productive clarifying? Doesn't "buildup" get under the cuticle as well?

I don't know the answer to the specific question of what happens with the closed cuticle, but I think that these clarifiers work on mineral buildup (mineral buildup is very high in ph, so the acidic ph helps neutralize it, I think). I don't know how well the substances mentioned work on other types of buildup.
