Negril, Jamaica

Has anyone been to Negril? I have a flight credit that I have to use in a couple of weeks and I want to go somewhere very warm. I was thinking of Rio(to get the full value out of the ticket) but then I decided I wanted to go somewhere where the water is nicer and I can relax a bit more. I've always wanted to go to Jamaica and heard the water is nicest here. If anyone's been, do you have any advice on things to do, where to stay, etc?
TIA

I stayed at Couples Negril. Jamaica is nice (I've also ben to Montego Bay - Ritz Carlton). But I prefer some of the other islands, like Antigua and Grand Cayman. Even the Bahamas...
Yes I heard Grand Cayman and Antigua are really nice but Jamaica seems like it would be a bit more fun(as far as dancing and drinking) and the food may be better, but I may be wrong. Which beaches had the clearest water and nicest sand to you?
Seven Mile Beach in Negril is really beautiful.
I've never been to Secrets St. James (Montego Bay), but that's supposed to be the really bumping spot. Are you going alone or w/ friends? I would think any of these major resorts would suit your purpose if you went w/ friends - lots of bars, casinos, pools, the beach, good restaurants, etc.
I was 6 months pregnant when I was last in Jamaica and I could barely walk, let alone party. lol But I thought (and heard) that Jamaica I just really dangerous once you leave the resorts. And the locals are super aggressive in Jamaica about panhandling and wanting to sell you weed (and braid your hair). I prefer to go to an island that's safe(r) to roam around on and venture away from the resort to see shows and eat and drink. I just never felt very safe away from the resorts in Jamaica but felt fine on the other islands.
Hmm..I'm going alone. I went to Turks & Caicos and was fine walking around alone even late at night and that was really nice and so were the locals but the nightlife was not that great and food was okay. I wasn't actually planning on leaving the resort, I just want to relax but that is a nice option to have.
As far as beaches, St.John is by far my favorite, just stunning. St Maarten (Dutch side) is also really nice. I don't know that either are the party spot you're looking for though.
Can you get into Cuba yet? It is incredibly safe, beaches are awesome and amazing night life off the resort if you're close to Veradero (Holguin is a little quieter) and you would be fine out and about on your own.
Bahamas is a quick flight if you're not going for long? I've heard some really nice resorts (We stayed at Breezes twice, would not recommend), beaches are great and lots going on at night. Its very touristy, so safe and lots going on.
I just realised some of this doesn't match with your flight questions.....sorry!

Thanks for the suggestions, no cannot get into Cuba yet but I really would like to go. I will look into St Johns, Bahamas is pretty close so I want to save that for another shorter trip. I've heard a lot about St Johns and St Marten but I thought they might be too quiet/honeymoon/couply for me. I am a little partial to Jamaica just because I am interested in the culture, although I know I probably won't get much if I don't leave the resort.
ETA: I've been looking up more stuff on solo travelling and now there are so many more options lol but St Johns came up a lot. I think at this point its going to be whatever hotel is the nicest and cheapest. Belize also came up.
Take the 2 train into Brooklyn :tongue5:
I guess everyone's got different opinions, quite a few female solo travelers online said they felt fine in Jamaica as long as they were not out alone late at night. My cousin also couch surfed in 3 different cities in Jamaica and felt safe in local areas(she was with someone else though) and loved it there. Negril is still on my list, maybe for next time. Since I like to be out extra late and I'm alone I figure I'd pick a calmer place but I hope it's a little more lively than turks and caicos was last year, lol, we'll see.
I've never been a fan of all inclusive unless I've been there many times and don't need to explore and just want to stay on the resort. That's what I thought I wanted for this trip(because I'm sooo tired lol) but I know myself and I'll get bored and would want to explore a new country.
