My hair always looks fab the first day I wash it but the second third fourth day.. It looks like a horrible frizzy ugly mess. I do rewet it the next day and put in my product but it doesn't do me any justice :( what do you think ladies?

Second day hair is often difficult for a lot of curlies. You can do a search on that and keep trying different methods.

One curly haired specialist that I saw said second day hair never happens unless you re-wet it. I'm sure he is wrong - it must happen for some people but not for me.

Some people swear by sleeping on a satin pillowcase or "pineappleing" their hair. Doesn't work for me. I hope you find a solution that works for you. Please post it if you do!

By the way, check my siggie below. You're in good company :)

It's really hard ... I still haven't figured it out. I tried a satin pillowcase, but that seems to make it worse for some reason. It's also pretty uncomfortable for me to sleep on because my head slides around!! I didn't expect that lol!

Sometimes pineappling helps, but not all the time.

My second and third day curls are nice but usually slightly more loose than first day curls but that is because I don't do well with hard hold gels (or gels at all). I actually prefer a loose bun on the top of my head with a scrunchie over the regular pineappling method now.

Rbb, how do you use the sealer? I mean, do you just put it on the ends or all over and exactly how do you apply it (stroke it on, scrunch it in etc.)? Do you ever use an oil as a sealer? I see you use CIAB as a sealer; I never thought of using it that way.

cp, my hair hates oils, i've tried abut 10 different ones. it loves butter products. the one i have been using for the past 4 years or so is spiral solutions emollience butter -- of course, shantelle closed her business but there is a slight chance she may reopen in the future. she had a going out of business sale and i stocked up on enough for 2 yrs as that is the shelf life.

after my leave in, i blot my hair, then add the emollience butte -- i take tiny amounts and emulsify on my fingers, then my fingers thru my hair, roots to ends, starting with my head upside down and doing back. then i flip my hair up and repeat for the top. then i plop for a few minutes as i dry, moisture, dress. the other thing i have recently changed is my towel, was using curl ease towel and now use the NEW deva towel, love it, my hair loves it. what it allows me to do is dry my hair to a drier degree without any frizzing and the curls are great.

i am now looking here and there for replacement for ss emollience butter when run out. figured easier to start with things that strike me as possible. i found this woman, the balm lady on etsy, and ordered one of her hair pomades. i use very very very little of this after if i see dry patches (the very white hairs lose moisture too rapidly) and that seems to be the perfect remedy. it's only been a little over a week, but so far, my hair is in love. :love7:

i only use the cj ciab from time to time. it has agave and my hair has a strange relationship with agave when it is the the top ingredients --loves it the first day, then good the second, and further til it diminishes. but when i use it occasionally it's more like a finishing serum and works great.

hope this answered your questions and wasn't too long!

Thanks very much, RBB. I'm going to look into the DEVA towel you suggest and I will read up on butter products. I often use a little CIAB to add shine. It is a unique product.

Hey ladies thanks for the suggestions. I found a rather odd thing that works for me. I scrunch using my regular products and rewet ting my hair of course but I find if I add my regular conditioner and scrunch it in it gets rid of most the frizzies and defines my curls pretty well. I'm on day 4 hair (I can go awhile without washing.) and my curls don't look too bad!! I will look into that towel. For now I use a regular t shirt.

I have a very difficult time with second day hair. I use a satin pillowcase. I have tried pineappling - that doesn't help.

My hair seems to get better on 2nd-3rd/4th day. Pretty easy to maintain on 2nd day+ with spritzing with water and applying a small amount of Aveda Be Curly. My waves are loose and free flowing.

Like you I DON'T like gels. I pretty much use curl creams with no hold or low hold. As long as my hair has moisture I'm good to go.

what would be good sealants for uber- fine hair?
yes I have trouble with second day hair, too.
A satin or silk pillowcase helps immensely, though.
I'm looking for more curl, body, volume, and shine-a miracle really.

you have to experiment, try different things. it also depends on your porosity. some people like oils, there are lighter oils, like grape seed that might work for you.
as i already said, beauticurls leave in has lots of emollients and it is a lightweight conditioner, so it generally works vey well for fine-haired curlies.

Scott Musgrave says 'wetter the better'. His blog has some great tips on wavy(not curly hair).

Personally I don't think you can put wavy hair in the same category as curly hair. I consider curly hair type 3 and wavy hair type 2.

Most of the CG products out there in my opinion are for bonafied curly hair. And what I see is people with type 2 hair use these products cause they want to hair to be type 3. With these products that can be achieved but it's not your type 2 hair in it's natural state. What happens is people become frustrated that their type 2 hair can't be type 3 instead of accepting and styling their hair in it's type 2 state.

When I first started CG I wanted my type 2 hair to be a type 3. I would scrunch in a ton of products to make it 'hold'. Too much work. Then I decided to style my hair in it's natural state and accept it. Much easier.

Why would you want to force your hair into something it's not was an 'ah ha' moment for me. Our son who is a bonafied curly type 3 doesn't have to force his hair into a type 3.

Even the Deva cuts are for bonafied curly hair. Never getting another Deva cut again, I've had 3 already. The Deva cuts are cut all the same with no style per se. The same what my wife calls a 'bob'. Which is great for a bonafied curly. When the same cut is cut on a wavy like me the 'bob' is more prevalent. I started to go back to my original non Deva stylist and the 1st thing she noticed she cut my hair was it was uneven. I told her I've had Deva cuts and she said that's why. Couple of weeks ago was the 1st non Deva cut in over year and she said it's going to be a process to get my hair 'even' if that makes sense. I want more style and not a Deva bob lol.

Hair's properties have way more to do with the retention of the hair's curl type that anything else. The curl type does not matter if you aren't using the proper products in relation to the hair's properties. Glycerin-sensitive hair won't behave well with glycerin-filled products, protein-sensitive hair will not look good when you're using products filled with protein, the list goes on. To get the maximum out of your hair, you have to use the right products. That does not change whether you are 2a or 4c. My boyfriend is 4c and while some of his routine and a few of the products he uses are different, it's not because of his curl type - It's because of his hair's properties. We can use the same gels even - Just different amounts!

Water is not my friend. If I resoak my head I get frizz. That has nothing to do with my curl type, and everything to do with the fact that I have low porosity hair that is fine and separates easy even with a styler that has hold. For someone else, it's probably different for them, because their hair is different. :)

My hair is a 10/10 and has been for the last week, because our humidity has dropped and we've had sun for a week, and it's supposed to continue. No water/dampness in the weather = great hair for me. I wake up, pull my hair out of my pineapple, fluff, put a small bit of curl cream on my hands, do a gentle scrunch, make sure the curls are in the right spots, and go. I have been rocking 2c/3a and 2b on my canopy for 3 days!

I agree with @macher. I realized over time that my hair isn't curly at all. It's wavy. Except for a patch in the very back. No product in the world will make it curly all over. Which actually, I'm ok with that, I prefer waves over curls anyway. BUT the struggle then becomes finding products and methods for wavy hair - not curly. Which it's tough being in the middle, trust me I know, I'm also a middle child.

I can't get 2nd day hair to save my life. My 2nd day hair is a pony tail. And 3rd day hair is a fantasy movie with unicorns running around. Since mine is about chin to shoulder length, I can't pineapple, and the heat from my body flattens out all wave (inconsistently across my head I might add) overnight and i wake up looking like I've laid dead in a field for a month. And I have TWO satin pillowcases.

Most of the time I'm on the verge of giving up this method. It's just too overwhelming and I can't get much results.

I don't think my second day goals are too lofty. I just want my hair to have:

    Minimal frizz
No wonky areas (pineappling does this to my hair)
    Not product-y
    Not take too much time.

I don't care if it is as wavy as first day hair.

Am I hoping for too much?

WavyKfromNJ: You will find products that work well for second day hair, but it takes time... And some experimenting both with products and how much to use and what products work well with others. I don't have any one "holy grail" but several depending on the weather and time of year and the style/curl retention I'm going for. Learning more about my porosity was the BEST thing I ever did for my hair because as a lopo there are so many ingredients that just coat my hair and sit on it, making it droopy and gunky and gross which leads to failed second and third day hair. That and I have done a lot of research on the scalp (due to seborrhea), and am considering going back to school to study trichology. :thumright:
