Transitioning hairstyles for very short hair?

I've been transitioning for around 4-5 months now. My hair is growing in nicely and all. The problem is I started off with a short, tapered, relaxed cut and I have no idea how to style it so that it doesn't look really messy with the natural hair underneath. My relaxed hair in the back is about 3 inches long and in the front, around 5-6. Help please?
