can box color ruin my hair

I had my hair colored at the salon I go too. But it was getting to expensive.So I was doing loreal box color for awhile but I had to do this every 3 weeks. The girl told me that the box color ruins the hair. Than I also told her if she heard of the curly girl method and she told me that is just a trend right now? ?????

Wavy, I can't say for sure, but I don't think box color is any worse for your hair than salon color. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they use box color. Did you see the colorist mix it up? She may just not want to lose you as a client.

Some people are very happy with the cg method and others don't like it that much. It's something you may want to try. Everyone's hair is different, so you have to experiment to see if you like it.

If you use the box hair color, try just to color the roots so that you aren't dyeing the hair over and over - putting color on top of color. That is too harsh and indeed can ruin your hair. If you are just covering gray roots you should be OK if you make sure to condition really well. It is helpful to leave on conditioning for at least a half hour once a week.

I were my hair wavy curly. I don't think she liked that I went out with a wet head. I do just do my roots but I was worried if I was damaging my hair by doing box color because she told me that. Box color was a no no. It cost me 72 dollars just for a touch up.

I've box colored my hair for years and it's very healthy. I also highlight it. However your hair may not be as "tough" as mine and I'm very careful to use both deep conditioners and protein rich conditioners to keep it in shape. It took LOTS of experimenting to find what works for my hair. Yours may be different. The question of box color vs. salon color would be a good one to ask about on Science-y Hair Blog it would be interesting to see what she has to say on the subject.

Now for the rant: Stylists will strip our poor hair with sulfates, pile on silicones, rip through it when wet and dry with fine tooth combs and brushes, burn our hair and scalps with blow dryers, flat irons and chemical treatments. Then they'll turn around and give us the big scare speech about box dyes, using only one product line, etc. They are in a competition to out sell each other and bring in money to the salon. Just remember why they are there, don't buy into their hype and stand up for yourself. It's your money, your time and your hair. There are lots of good stylists out there that do care about their clients but I've found they are very few and very far between.

Badly applied box colour is as dangerous as badly applied salon colour.

The majority of box colours have weaker developers in them than salon colours as manufacturers don't want to be sued for damaging your hair and scalp.

^^^ Good point. That's why I don't think it likely that box colors will be more damaging than salon colors and the OP's colorist is not being entirely truthful - just doesn't want to lose a client.

I leave my mousey brown hair for the natural lowlights and my whites for the natural highlights. I use a cool ash brown for added lowlights and Revlon Frost and Glow Honey Blond (medium to dark brown hair) for added highlights. That way I have four colors in my hair and I don't have to fight the white roots growing in. Sometimes I switch out the Honey Blond for the lighter Blond to Light Brown highlights.

BUT this is time consuming and I think hard on my hair so every once in a while I give my hair a "break" and just do an overall color with a semi permanent to let the color fade out over time. This also helps the highlights not get to be too much.

BUT (again) my hair is really strong and seems to LOVE color. It really does. It seems to curl up tighter and look much shinier when it's freshly colored.

I honestly feel, that though that statement is somewhat true, I think hairdressers in general emphasis it loads to collect your pennies.
I went to the hairdressers to get blonde highlights, many years ago and my hair was absolutely destroyed.
Feeling a bit hurt from my hair being damaged, but still wanting to experiment with colours I decided that if anyone was going to destroy my hair, at least let it be me.
I have been using box colour for years now, hair dying takes ""alot out of your hair"" and you need to replenish your hair ""and put it back into your hair"". So I would prepare my hair weeks in advance, making sure I deep condition, I trim split ends, and make sure it is at optimal health.
During the dying process, I can't say this is recommendable but I used to mix coconut oil with my hair dye just make my hair feel abit more softer afterwards.
After dying and washing, I will deep condition for the next few weeks.
After implementing this regimen, I never had problems with box colours, experienced damaged or anything negative with my hair.

Since childhood I had a very beautiful curly hair that my mom was tired to answer everyone that it is really natural curly hair. But being an adult I decided to straigthen it as I didnt like it. I tried to change the color as I had black hair and wanted red stripes.

Box dyes can have something called metallic salts in them, very hard to get out of your hair.

If you continue to color your hair dark, youre layering the color on top each time making the ends much darker. Eventually they will go black and will be very hard to remove. If you want to use a box color, try to only do your roots and don't pull it through every time. My natural color is brown and I use it sometimes for correction There are a lot of other chemicals in the box dyes and the semi permanent ones aren't always so semi.
Loreal would be the brand I recommend the most, it is the closest to a professional line out of all of them.
