Keeping ends hydrated

Been using Shea Moisture oil for my ends cause my ends get really dry. The problem is it doesn't last. Any suggestions or alternatives to keep my ends hydrated?

I recommend sealing with an oil like olive oil or avocado oil. I have low porosity hair and I use those oils for sealing my ends. Works like a charm. ;)

I like coconut oil. You may need to rewet the ends of your hair and add a little bit of moisturizer or conditioner, then a little oil and gel and let the hair dry. That works for me.

I don't use oils to seal… too lazy and they weigh down my hair. But lately I've been taking some SS PT (sort of like leave in conditioner) and mixing it with water and smoothing it over the parts of my hair that need it. It seems to help with definition, turning frizz into curls and reducing frizz overall. I use it on 2nd day hair.

    What's SS PT stand for?

I'm just kind of thinking out loud here (although this isn't really "out loud," being on the computer, but you know what I mean), but I wonder if maybe instead of an oil you need something with water-based ingredients AND oils. I am starting to come to the conclusion that oils on their own don't work very well for me, but when they are part of an emulsion that also contains water, that works much better. Have you tried putting a little bit of water on your ends and then a leave-in conditioner at night, before you go to bed? (The leave-in would be with water as the first ingredient but with quite a few oils too.) That would give it time to soak in. Lately I've been dampening my hair every night and adding some leave-in before putting it up in a pineapple, and that seems to be helping my hair retain moisture better overall.

Never thought of that. The Shea Moisture oil product that I'm using works but it doesn't sustain for a long time.

What leave in are you using overnight?

I've been using the Beautiful Curls leave-in for wavy to curly hair, or the Shea Moisture Yucca and Plantain Anti-Breakage Strengthening Style Milk. The former is lighter than the latter, but the latter also seems to be more moisturizing. I have also used the Andalou Naturals Argan Oil Plus leave-in conditioner, which has protein in it but seems to be the most moisturizing of the leave-ins I have mentioned here.

Do you have a leave-in already that you could try? Maybe start with your own leave-in; you could even add a drop of oil to the leave-in to make it extra moisturizing.

The leave in I use I don't use anymore cause of the glycerin and the weather.

Are you applying your leave in to wet hair overnight?

Macher, I wet my hair a bit with the water from the sink before I go to bed, and then I apply the leave-in. I smooth it on over my hair and then scrunch to get the curl back. Then I put my hair in a pineapple, although maybe you don't do that since you're a guy. :) When I wet my hair, I wet it just enough that I start to hear the squishing sound, and after I scrunch in the leave-in, I use a t-shirt to blot my hair if it seems overly wet.

I am still experimenting, but I feel like putting the leave-in in my hair at night helps it absorb into the hair better than doing it the next morning as part of a refresh.

Did this last night but didn't pineapple. When I woke up my hair looked nice and moisturized more than usual. The problem is I work outside in the elements. This morning I happened to start work early in the AM. It's cold like 36 degrees and a little windy. After a while my hair started drying out.

If I worked in an office or something I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have this issue. I don't wear anything on my head and even when it gets colder I try not to wear anything on my head. Just don't like wearing hats or caps.

Ok my job I don't have to look good LOL. I can live with it.

I guess what I'm looking for is when I get home as a refresher on my dry hair. Something that won't weigh my hair down or make my hair greasy. I prefer if I can not to get my hair completely wet. When I get home I take a quick shower my don't wet my hair.

I'm also wondering since I work outside if my hair needs to condished everyday.

I haven't had success with any type of refreshing that lasts all day. Even when I refresh using quite a bit of water, my hair gets dried out after several hours, even though I'm inside. The air is just so dry. I'm still experimenting, though. I'm trying to see what happens if I incorporate more aloe into my refreshing, since aloe is supposed to absorb moisture from the air. It's kind of like glycerin, but I don't think it causes as many problems for people as glycerin does.

We live in Philly. In the summer it's pretty humid. My hair doesn't have as much issues in the summer humidity. My hair gets a lot curlier in the summer. It will get halo frizz but it doesn't look so bad cause my hair loves moisture from the air.

My issues are with the dry air. I'm assuming there's not as much moisture in the air with the changing of the seasons. It's the weekend and I'm not working and my hair has been looking pretty darn great. I'm not outside nearly as much like job. So I'm not out in the windy dry elements as much.

I've been doing the Wet Down method I posted about in the main forum and so far my hair seems to be nicely moisturized. The test will be when I have to go to work tomorrow and work outside in the elements. Now I don't have to look good for my job but it's when I get home and running out and doing stuff I want my hair to look decent. I can do the Wet Down method when I get home from work and I'm pretty confident my hair will look decent. But then it's pretty wet and then I have to blow dry it. If I let it air dry it will take too long, like 3 hours'ish. Often times I don't go right home and make some runs and recently from the weather by hair hasn't been looking good. I'm really thinking getting a buff for my head to protect my hair. I don't wear hats or caps. Even when it's freezing out I'll go as long as I can without putting a hat on. Just don't like anything on my head.

If I worked inside in an office or something I know I wouldn't have hair issues.
