What's Your Winter Hair Care Routine?

Alyssa.GodfrAlyssa.Godfr Registered Users Posts: 65
My hair absolutely hates winter. It looks best in summer, and the higher the humidity, the better. Humidity makes it bounce up and encourages the curl. The dryness of winter makes my hair limp and stringy. I've been trying to put more moisture into my hair, but it still doesn't have much wave/curl on the top and it feels pretty dry.

What are your challenges during winter? Does your hair behave better or worse? What do you do differently?

I'm not sure how to make a signature, but here's what I know about my hair.

Type: 2a in the top layer and 2b/c underneath
fine
very porous
medium to high density
not currently following CG - I need to get my hands on the right products first
Routine: sulfate-free shampoo, Squish to condish with Suave Naturals conditioner, Scrunch in Not Your Mothers Kinky Moves, Plop, Scrunch in Got2b Kinkier Mousse, Pixie diffuse to about 80% dry and air dry.

This was working well until suddenly it wasn't :/ Tried clarifying in case it was build up, but no dice.

My hair, too, stopped responding to my warmer weather routine and my husband pointed out that it was maybe time to switch up my routine again. It happens pretty much every year and I find my hair definitely doesn't respond well to winter, but... There is hope.

I generally start applying heavier products (in small amounts)... So that means a creamier leave-in, cream gels, etc. I've been trying to utilize more of the hair products that I have and am considering buying some more to mix it up.
Also, I've started washing at night again because who wants to go outside with wet hair?!

Some of the creamy products I like are the CJ Coffee Coco Curl Cream (I use the light one in the summer), SM's Curl Enhancing Smoothie and Jane Carter's cream gel. I'll use very little of any of those products (sometimes I layer a couple) and then I'll put my regular Mop Top Curly Custard on top.

I'm currently experimenting with how to deal with my hair at night and am definitely curious about ways to keep my curls lasting over the course of a few days and some good curl refreshers. But that's where I'm at right now!

Aha! I knew the answer would be buy more products! Lol. Thanks for the response, though. I'm very interested to see how everyone adjusts to the dry weather.

I recently ordered AG Beachbomb and Re:coil as well as a curl amplifying mousse (I forget what brand). I was hoping products that say they amplify or enhance curls would do the trick. I've been hesitant to try heavy products just cause my hair is so fine and my wave is so weak and easily pulled out. Seriously, if I comb my hair when I get out of the shower, it's done. No coming back from that. But you may be on to something. Maybe a creamy leave in will do the trick.

I wonder, too, if glycerin may be the culprit? I read that glycerin pulls moisture from the air in wet weather but pulls moisture out of your hair in dry weather.

My hair hates glycerin no matter the weather. We have relatively high humidity all year round. Just no heat to go with the humidity. My hair is 100x better since going glycerin free.
    Multicultural (Caucasian/Filipina)
    2b/2c - f - iii - low porosity - normal elasticity
Holy Grail: Matrix Biolage Cleansing Conditioner for Curly Hair
I rotate through the rest of my products depending on weather and etc but usually don't need them
I try not to use products tested on animals if I can help it.

Glycerin tends to not be a good thing in the winter.
And yes, the answer is usually to buy more products... The life of curlies...
Check out some of the ones I recommended and when I say use a little, I mean like a pea sized amount for your entire head. Seriously, you'll be surprised how much your hair likes it.

If I use products with glycerin in hot and humid weather it doesn't bother my hair and my hair can get pretty curly I guess because of the moisture. In the winter it's different. If I use glycerin in colder weather my hair will get stringy and yucky.

Since I like my hair wavy and not type 3'ish curly I'm going to see how glycerin free products work in hot and humid weather. I love how my hair is looking now in cold weather. Chunky thick sausage waves, free flowing.

My highly porous hair hates Winter as well. Like others have mentioned, I've moved towards heavier products, mostly in the Shea Moisture line. I like the Coconut & Hibiscus, as well as the Jamaican Black Castor oil. I also deep condition once a week. Here lately, I've been playing with a texture taffy. I've been using it as a finishing product. It seems to be helping my perpetually wide open cuticles retain moisture tremendously.

I'm going to try out a hard hold gel. Trying to decide between Max Green's Alchemy Sculpting Gel and Raw Curls Hard Hold Gel. They're both kinda spendy but I try to avoid chemicals when possible (or at least super harmful ones). I'm also looking at a light pomade as a finisher and just rotating products for the most part.

I am starting to pre poo with coconut oil the night before wash day. I'm also using the SM deep conditioner treatment everytime I wash. My hair is liking it so far. I recently got a shower head water filter and I think will help a lot. I've been sleeping with a satin cap because even though it's winter I almost always sleep with a fan on it's just on a lower speed in the winter. These seem to help. I might add the DC with heat deeper into the winter.

+1 cj cccc. in spite of the glycerin it has enough emollients to make it excellent in low dews. the past two winters my hair has looked really good, including 2nd and sometimes 3rd day hair. i have just started using it again.

Hey rbb, have you used her cccc Lite? How is it different from the cccc? I love the lite but I'm wondering if I should try the cccc for winter.

so interesting that you asked that as i just ordered my first bottle of cccc lite in the cj black friday sale. it's on it's way but most likely i won't see it before the weekend.
i ordered it to use as a refresher as i just noticed (duh, where has my head been??) that it is reported to be excellent on dry hair, all hair types. i don't see myself using it on wet hair but definitely would be thrilled to have this as a refresher.
fyi -- she had to reformulate the cccc in fall of 2014 and i love the newer formula even more, it's more user-friendly, in fact, yesterday i used it without a leave in and had great hair! and great 2nd day hair.

Hey guys sorry I fell off the grid. School go super stressful. Hair update- tried AG Beachbomb and it's fantistic. My curly hairs started curling again and my wavy hairs were waiver and more defined. Very very pleased with that. Hope it keeps up cause it's also been a tad wetter out. What's cccc?

No I've not used it as a refresher as I've never been able to get second day hair with my hair this short. I didn't even know you could use it as a refresher. So I'm going out for a belated birthday celebration tonight and I'm going to put some in right now on my ends and see if I can get them looking a little better. Thanks for the suggestion!

i don't have it yet, but i will i guess try smoothing it on. here is what marsha wrote in her january 2010 blog (she used to blog and the blogspot has lots of great info) --

Coffee-Coco Curl Creme-Lite - This is a lightweight version of the original formula and is perfect for wavy-curly hair for use on wet or dry hair. When I first developed this one, I made it for use on wet hair. Then, my manufacturer and her chemist tried it by chance on their wavy (& colored) dry hair and swore by it. I recently had the chance to visit them and tried it out on their hair. I was amazed! It added a little sheen, moisture, definition, and bounce to their hair! So when I returned home, I tried it on my hair dry and it worked like a charm. Now, this was not developed for my hair type (3c/4a), so it is too light for me to use on wet hair, but on dry hair, for refreshing and killing frizz...excellent! For 2a-3b hair types, feel free to try it both ways and you will probably not need a leave-in when using this as it is very conditioning. For 3c-4a types, I think it works best on dry hair for reviving curls/coils, but that is how it works out on my hair.

-- on the cj website the cccc lite page it also says it can be used as a refresher on dry hair.

    Happy Birthday!

Haha so it looks like it's normal for the curl to loosen in the winter, even for someone with much curlier hair. In your case, I guess it's working out well. Do you really think my hair is straight though? Honestly, I've been oscillating between thinking it's quite curly/wavy and I'm just deluding myself and should blow it dry and straighten it. You're right, there are sections of my hair that are almost straight, especially in dry weather. There are other sections, though, especially by the nape of my neck and my ears, that form some pretty tight, almost 3a looking ringlets sometimes. They're almost too spirally. They look like tubes of hair lol. I just want some consistency, and I want to know what to do on any given day to get that. Like yesterday, my hair was awesome, but then again it was warm and it rained. Today it's cold and it snowed earlier, and I did the same thing to my hair and it looked scraggly instead of wavy/curly. Ugh. Buying the products suggested is probably the answer, but I just don't have the money to try so many things all the time. I already invested more money than I should have into it.

My routine really doesn't change, my hair loves the cold weather.

1.) Pre Poo W Coconut oil (I've been slacking as of late)
2.) Co Wash / Deep Condition / Detangle
3.) Brush hair / braid in 5 braids / Seal / Plop and Air dry

    I clarify and PT 2x a month.

    And that's it! :)

Thanks! I thought the same thing, actually! I have watched a lot of her videos and gotten some good styling methods from her. My first round of products were things she suggested, but she uses a lot of gel which it turns out doesn't work well for me (at least in this weather). I gave them to my friend who has more 2c-type hair. It might be a porosity difference or something. I'm not sure.

I recently bought that "Noodle Head" hair glaze from Sally's that she used. It's awesome for my porous curls! One of the main ingredients (2nd next to water) is hydrocellulose which my hair adores. It's sorta of a gel, but more serumish (is that a word?) It was on sale a week or so ago. So far, there hasn't been all that much gellish crunchiness (ymmv). It also seems to be moisturizing. I also purchased the Bouncy Cream off of Amazon. I really like it. It works very well with the Noodle Head glaze.

So far, there hasn't been all that much gellish crunchiness (ymmv). It also seems to be moisturizing. I also purchased the Bouncy Cream off of Amazon. I really like it. It works very well with the Noodle Head glaze.

Oohhh that does sound interesting. I'm gonna see if any of this stuff is at Cosmo Prof. That way if it doesn't work out I can return it :angel9:

i received my shipment from curl junkie with cccc lite today. it was a great day to try it as it was 2nd day hair that was somewhat frizzy as i had dried my hair too much with a towel in a rush yesterday, which resulted in some frizz. then i wet my hands and ran my fingers thru my hair this morning..... my hair wasn't bad, just 'eh.'
the cccc lite transformed that. it took away about 80% of the frizz, and left the rest actually looking good because it did have shine to it, and i had more curl definition. it made my hair 'going-out ready' :ice-cream:.
it's only my first day using this but i can already tell this is going to be an HG refresher for me.

    3a, some 2c & 3b, medium texture, porosity normal, low elasticity :-(
