Caring for dry ends?

Therese1Therese1 Registered Users Posts: 2,563 Curl Virtuoso
For those of you with fine hair that gets dry at the ends, do you do anything special to keep it in good condition? I just got my hair cut, and the ends always look so much better once they've been trimmed. I'm wondering how I can keep my ends more hydrated between haircuts. I have very fine hair that looks greasy easily, so I wouldn't be able to use anything too heavy.

My hair isn't fine but it's pretty thick and I get dry ends. 1st day hair my ends are good. 2nd + day my ends tend to get dry. What I do is squeeze some leave in on my ends.

There is a cool trick I learned in which I'll share with you; before bed, braid your hair in 4 sections. Wet the ends with water really well, you want them saturated. Then, apply your favorite moisturizer (in can be light oil or a leave in) and wrap the ends around a Bobby pin. Sleep on it, and in the morning you will have smooth, moisturized ends.

Now my hair is low porosity and not as curly as hers, but it works well for me. Just try it out for your self, see how much you like it.

Thanks, macher, I'll add some extra LI on nonwash days.

BeautyOG, what an interesting thing to do. I may have to modify it--my hair is not quite shoulder length, and braiding usually frustrates me because my hair is so fine that it slides out of my hands when I try to braid. But maybe I could pineapple my hair as usual and add some bobby pins in the pineapple. It might be especially useful for the shorter strands that frame my face and that don't stay in the pineapple.

A little bit of a light oil on the ends will help too. It might be an idea to seal your ends after every condition.

What oils do you consider "light"? I think I read apricot kernel somewhere on the board. I have some of that.

Grapeseed, jojoba, sweet almond, and rose oil are the ones that seem to be most common, but apricot is also another light oil so you could try that. I use jojoba very sparingly, because even light oils can bother my low porosity hair.

I'm so glad you asked this because I've been struggling with this for a while and I had just begun to accept that that was my hair's natural state  I'll have to try these suggestions :)

Last couple of days I've been using a very very small amount of this Shea Moisture oil type product. Comes in a spray bottle but you have to spray on hands and rub hands together. How I apply it is I make pretend I'm making a pony tail with the product in my hands. Seems to be working for me ends.
