how to get good second day hair

in Hair Type 2
I've tried many times to get good second day hair, but it always looks frizzy and I have lots of fly aways. For those of you who have good second day hair, can you please share your routines (also with how you sleep on it etc?). Are some of us just not able to get good second day hair?

AmbersWaves, I sometimes have decent second-day hair, though not always. I wet my hands with water and smooth it over my hair (just spraying my hair with water creates frizz; I have to smooth the water over my hair). I get my hair decently wet, though only about the bottom half (not the roots) is wet. I put on one pump of Giovanni mousse per side and then lightly scrunch with a t-shirt. If I feel like my hair lacks weight and is very flyaway, I will also add a little bit of InnerSense texturizer, which is kind of heavy. After scrunching gently, I clip and air dry or else diffuse. This has been working pretty well for me.

I've been getting really great 2nd day hair. Since I sleep on a cotton pillow case when I wake up my hair is a mess and doesn't seem like refreshing will work but it does. I've found that I have to get my hair as wet as I can stand it with a spray bottle. I've tried the wetting hair with hands but that doesn't work for me cause water doesn't get evenly distributed.
When my hair is damp/wet from spray bottle there is definitely signs that the products allied from the day before are somewhat reactivated but my hair still needs a little of something. I work outside in the elements. I find that on the weekends when I don't work cause I'm not constantly outside my 2nd day hair only needs very little refreshing.
Anyway when my hair is damp/wet I'll very lightly scrunch cause they're still some product in there. Then I'll add literally a drop of Aveda Be Curly styling prep to both sides of my hair. I put literally a drop in my hands and emulsify between hands and very lightly scrunch one side then apply small drop and do the other side. Even though the styling prep has glycerin high on the list this stuff is extremely moisturizing and I think the other ingredients that provide the moisture balance out the glycerin well.
This has been working out for me for 2nd day hair and my theory is I've been using a product line that glycerin is near the last on the ingredient list. If I use Deva Curl Believe-In curl enhancer my 2nd day hair when I try to refresh gets stringy and that 'wet when it's not wet look'. Deva Believe-In is very high in glycerin. The Aveda Be Curly curl enhancer is very low in glycerin and doesn't feel anything like the Deva Believe-In. The Believe-In feels more like a gel with some hold and acts more like a gel first but still is moisturized where Be Curly enhancer acts more like moisturizer but still provides some definition but in a different way.
What works best for me is either wetting it down completely (not my favorite thing to do - I really want my 2nd day hair to be stupid quick and easy!) or using flax seed gel on dry hair. After I take my hair out of the nightly ponytail and fluff it out a bit, I'll smooth my hair between hands coated in FSG, and lightly scrunch the ends to reshape them.
I don't mind a slightly combed out look, and the FSG really minimizes the 2nd day frizz for me, even if I woke up with it.
A lot of lazy days just sees the hair never coming out of the overnight ponytail, though :tongue5: If it looks halfway decent I'll often just leave it as is!

Mod CG since 11/2012. My waves occasionally look best when combed out, so you can pry my combs from my cold, dead hands :laughing6:
I like the slightly combed out look too. Often times through the day I'll finger comb my hair really quick.
Don't know why I'm getting great 2nd day hair and decent 3rd day hair. The weather has changed and the air is dryer. My theory is products with very low glycerin, products that provide moisture AND protein. My hair doesn't mind product with heavy protein but it seems to mind product with high glycerin in dryer weather.
I also notice that products with low glycerin or no glycerin don't have that gel like sticky consistency.
I bought Aveda Confixor Gel yesterday. It has glycerin but it's not high on the ingredient list compared to Deva Curl Utra defining gel which glycerin is high on the list. When I got my cut from the Aveda Salon the stylist used Confixor on me. I noticed it was VERY thin. She if I use Confixor I could use Be Curly curl cream. She used like a dime size of curl cream and a dime size of Confixor. The Confixor provided very little hold but I like how I was able to touch my hair and run my fingers through it.
Anyone else experiencing similar?
Low Poo: Shea Moisture Fruit Fusion Weightless, Giovanni TT
Rinse Out: Suave Naturals. V05
Leave In: Pea size amount of any of the above or As I Am
Stylers: Herbal Essences TT Curl Boosting Mousse, Darshana Hair Oil
The only thing is because I'm very lo-po my third day hair has no frizz but my curls droop on my canopy. Which doesn't bother me because my hair still looks pretty cute.
