braiding your hair

What are your routines for braiding your hair? If I let my hair dry, first of all it takes forever to dry and then it's hard for me to pull apart my hair in order to braid it. It also has a lot of fly aways that don't look good with my hair type.

If I don't dry my hair, my hair looks matted to my head, and I prefer a little more volume at the base of my head.

I'm looking for suggestions as to what other wavies do when braiding hair.

My hair never looked good when I took the braids out. When I had longer hair, I only braided to style it in a braid itself, not to get waves. The best results I ever got when I actually wanted uniform waves were when I sprayed sea salt spray lightly in my dry hair, then braided overnight. But even then, my hair still looked much nicer with my natural curl pattern. My hair would never dry if I braided it damp, once I unraveled the braids, it was just like I was waiting for the hair to dry all over again. And then it would just get frizzy.

The only time I braid my hair is when I put oil in my hair on the weekend while I'm sitting around the house. Otherwise, mine just does exactly what Mei's does...really unattractive crinkles and still damp hair in the morning if I showered at night.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I actually wasn't referring to braiding my hair for waves, I just want to braid it as a style, like you said Mei. I'm wondering, when you did braid your hair, did you braid it wet or dry? That's my issue, if it's wet it looks glued to my head and then if it's dry I get so many fly aways and it's hard to separate.

Maybe wavies and curlies just don't mix well with braiding? :(

I actually braided mine when it was about 75% dry, after adding some leave-in and letting it air dry to that percent. That seemed to prevent most of the frizz and allowed my hair to dry the rest of the way while in the braid.

I wish my current hair was long enough to braid. Braids are handy for those times when you just don't want to style it or use products like gels and mousses.

When my hair was mid-back length, I braided mine dry but used coconut oil and bobby pins to control flyaways. I typically only did this on the day before my wash day.

Have you tried blow-drying just at the roots and leaving the middle/ends of your hair wet? I've done this before to avoid that "matted to your head" look, but I try to avoid blow-drying when possible so it's not a perfect solution

I hope you find something that works; best of luck!

My hair is nearly always tied up in some way out of my face. That being said, I normally diffuse on low heat with a hair dryer and a diffuser on low heat til it's about 75-80% dry. After it's completely dry, I tie it up in a braid or a chignon of some kind.

I have thick, long and wavy hair. When my hair is still wet after the shower i'll let it airdry for 30-60 minutes and then i braid my hair because if i let it airdry without braiding it it becomes a mess as well and my hair also takes forever to dry. I have my hair braided everyday to keep it less tangly and out of my face. Hope this will help you!
