Protective Styling

I haven't really posted here in a long while...I missed you gals...

Has anyone used a "hair accessory" for protective styling? I recently ran into a few curlies who had natural looking curly weave pieces and I really liked it. I'm wondering if anyone has one and where you purchased it. I don't want the tight fro look nor do I want the 3b look. Something more in line with the 4a look...any suggestions?

Your cut looks great straight. Who did your roller set? I may consider a change up. Sorry, off-topic. I don't know anything about pieces, excpet there are a few places on-line, as well as Venus Beauty Supply in Cambridge.

Playing with my hair is a hobby. Fluffy, fine natural 4a. Goal= Healthy, beautiful hair that retains its length.

You know, I've never ever worn a weave before, but my boss, who is also natural and 4B is a self proclaimed weave queen. Well she makes these wigs and they all are like natural textured wigs and not outlandish looking so you wouldn't really think it was a wig or weave, it just looks like her hair. My hair is in such bad shape that I'm thinking of trimming it. then just washing it, conditioning it, and plaiting it up every few days then slapping the wig on top for protective styling. I won't be prone to pick at it this way, it will be a lot less hassle, and I'll still look cute lol.

    heathernicole,

you are funny, but i feel you. yeah, i've come across quite a few natural women who have a back up "hair accessory". it's hilarious because it's not as if they don't have beautiful hair, it's more of a convenient way to out smart a "bad hair day". i purchased a half wig over the weekend and i have to admit, it's fun. i get a completely new look with little hassle. although, i have been thinking about getting one that looks more like my true texture. does your boss make her own? if so, i'm curious. would you share her informaiton with me? i'd love to talk with her. i'm coming down to durham in june for a meeting, maybe things will work out. i love to swim and run in the summer so this just might be a great alternative route. this week i washed, deep conditioned, oild my scalp and braided it down. it reminded me of when my mother use to care for my hair. lots of love and very little hooplah...my hair was gorgeous then...

interesting topic...my hair is still too short for most protective styles and I am dealing with alopecia and my doctor mentioned getting a wig..I was horrified...as all wigs look well *wiggy* to me and how anyone could match my texture in a weave, I was like...I will just have to shave it off, so the rest can catch up...sadly
So I come here and look what topic I find..
Please do share about your friend's wig making or anyplace people are finding textured hair and pieces.
    :)
    HG: WEN Sweet Almond

I will not chop my hair off in frustration this year. I will not..I promise, no braids, no braids, no chopping.

    PJcurl,

Tonight I'll post pics of my accessory on my fotki page. My style reminds me of CurlyNikki's hair. I get tons of compliments everyday and I bought a cheap $25 wig...

She told me how she does it, you put either a shower cap orpaper towels (black or regular) on your head to protect it then you put some type of cap on top of it. (I can't remember the cap, I'll tell you when i find out). Then you glue tracks of extensions to the cap and you sleep with the weave on for one night. this gives the glue time to dry and mold to the contour of your head. After that you don't sleep with it on anymore. And BAM you gotta wig. She has like 4 of them and they all look good meaning no tracks showing lol. I'll find out more details about this process later.

Thanks Heather! I finally broke down and went to my stylist friend and got a weave. I have never had one and all last night I was in panic mode, thinking it was too fake looking. My alopecia is in the center of my hair mostly so I have no other way to wear my hair right now. So its all braided and under a curly weave and after all the work comments today...I am ok with it. It's' about getting my hair back healthy. It was funny when the receptionist said....How did they pull your hair out like that...tho ..:). Adults say the strangest things....
