Holy Grail Beauty Products 2015-2016

HG items can change frequently so I thought I would start this thread. Some of you may have found brand new items that have replaced old standby's, or come in as a close second.

For me... Dior AIRFLASH Color Correcting Primer and AIRFLASH foundation. It is on the high end, no doubt about it, and I feel like so much is wasted due to the spray can packaging BUT it is so good. I normally buy a high end foundation or two once a year but rarely repurchase. This I will repurchase. I don't think I've ever had a foundation match my skin more perfectly. 'My skin but better' would be the best way to describe it, and it is so light weight. I spray it on the back of my hand or directly on and brush and go. (PS- Sephora makes a dupe that some like better).

Lancôme Shine Lover Lipsticks. Light weight, creamy, high shine, good pigment but sheer and they just feel fantastic. Great for people who have a hard time finding reds (or whatever color) because they are not super strong or bright. Also great for work. A nice, noticeable, wash.

DIORSHOW BLACK OUT mascara. I should have gotten the waterproof and I will next time but even with a bit of smudging, I love this stuff. I love big, fat, textured (not rubber or plastic) mascara wands. This and Jane Iredale Longest Lash are my HG's when it comes to fluffy mascara wands. Black Out is just that. One coat is all I need to look like I've slapped double false lashes on. It lengthens (note: I have pretty full & long lashes to begin with but they are light in color and i look exhausted w/o mascara) and it separates w/o losing volume beautifully. The Jane Iredale is lighter and softer but still amps my lashes up.

South Seas Bronzer. It's light, natural, good for fair skin and builds nicely. It replaced a Wet n' Wild dupe for Tarte.

Elf Translucent Mattifying Powder. Nice pressed powder that has replaced all the pressed powders I loved before. Rimmel to GloMinerals. It stays in my bag.

Dior LIP GLOW Color Reviver Balm. It is a clear formula that works with your natural lip color like a mood ring. Changes it ever so slightly, and makes it better. It's my go to, almost every single day.

Lancôme LES SOURCILS DEFINIS Brow Expert Pencil in 105 Brown. It is so fine and percise. I do light strokes to fill in gaps and throw some random clear gel on top.

NYX Pore Filling Primer. Dupe for Benefits Pore-fessional but it's 10 times cheaper and holds twice the product.

Lancôme contour and highlight stick (sorry the name rubbed off). It just came out in 2015, has 5 color options (I use the lightest/cool tone), matches my powder contour color in the Blush Subtle Palette (which I've been using a few years) perfectly, and blends so easily. It's always looks light and natural on me (but I use a light hand here & there if I contour and don't go Drag Queen overboard). I could take or leave the highlight. I like my Clinique Up-Lighting cream highlighter much better.

NYX Rouge Cream Blush CB05 or Glow. Dupe for MAC Dolly Mix. Love it but usually set it with Estée Lauder Pure Color Blush in Pink Kiss because it does fade quickly.

I've spent too much on makeup this year but most of it has been tax return or Christmas gift card(s) funded and I've been buying Wet n' Wild or Elf cream eye shadows to balance it out.

PS- For those of you who love cream shadow/paint pots... Elf Smudge Pots are fantastic. No creasing. No need to set with a powder like several other cream shadows. Once you put it on, it goes no where and stays the same all day. One store in my town just got a small Elf display this year so I still have limited color options. They put out 4, maybe 5, smudge pots at a time but I love all the ones I have tried (and they have a ton of MAC dupes).

Still working out a few things. So far, here's what's moved to HG status for me.

    Eyeshadow- All things Urban Decay
Eyeliner- Urban Decay (honorable mention to Makeup Forever Aqua)
Bronzer- Hourglass or Tarte Park Avenue Princess, depending on level of glow vs. matte that I'm looking for
Powder- I don't wear powder often, but Prescriptives Magic Liquid Powder is amazing
    Blush- Hourglass
    Lipstick- Bite Beauty

Still searching for HG mascara, foundation, and powder.

If I lived near a Sephora I would run, not walk, to Hourglass and Becca. I love highlighters far more than contours. I always have and have used them on and off since the 90s. Hourglass looks so pretty, be it their highlighters, shadows or blushes. Pretty sure I would want all things Charlotte Tilbury too.

*I like to swatch or test things first though, so I'm not too big on ordering.

I'm the same way. I rarely order online. Hourglass works especially well because I have slightly cool undertones (this is probably why it's so hard for me to find a foundation I like- so many great formulas have yellow undertones).

Lip gloss: Jane Iredale. It is very natural (I'm sensitive to chemicals), and it has really excellent staying power. She also makes something called Lip Fixation, which is a lip stain that you can put a lip gloss over. This really stays put!

Mascara: Jane Iredale Longest Lash. Again, this is a natural product. It stays on well, and it isn't clumpy, like another natural mascara I have. I use the black one (Black Ice). It's not waterproof.

Eyeshadow- Bobbi Brown Eye Shadow in Slate; MAC Eyeshadow in Vanilla
Eyeliner- Clinique Quickliner in Smoky Brown
Brows - Anastasia Brow Pomade in Taupe
Mascara - Clinique Lash Doubling Mascara in Black-Brown
Foundation - Peter Thomas Roth CC cream in Light-Medium
Blush- Revlon Powder Blush in Softspoken Pink (discontinued, but still easy to find on eBay and other online sources) for daytime, Clinique Soft-Pressed Powder Blush in Cupid for evening
Lipstick- I have so many! But Clinique Different Lipstick in Shy is a longtime favorite, and probably closest to HG status of any of them.
Red lipstick - In a category by itself, since it's something I've always struggled with: finding one that doesn't wear me! But this year, I finally found MY red: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Berry Rich, which is more of a muted rose- or pink-red (I'm wearing it in my avatar pic!)

Same here. That is why I love the Dior AIRFLASH. It matches my undertones perfectly. Most foundations are either a little too yellow or a little too pink (Chanel), but it's perfect.

I do have quite a bit of her eyeshadow. I love the neutral five-color palette I got a few months ago. The colors are just perfect. I love the oyster color (the cream color)! I've loved everything I've tried from JI except for the eye pencils. They didn't have much staying power. But I haven't found a natural eye pencil that does. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

I think it is too. I have only tried their MYSTIKOL liners and they are powder. Color on one end and highlighter on the other. I love those and they last well, just like the shadows, but I have not bothered with their pencils. The liquid foundations are not that great either. Glow Time Full Coverage BB is nice but it takes a while to get the application down. It's incredibly thick and easy to over do.

I get a 25% discount from my local store that sells J.I and they have been super good to me when it comes to gifts and extra discounts. I adore them for it because I love the shadows and lip lines. The step compacts that hold shadows or lip glosses, blush, bronzer, etc. are great for travel. I've picked up 2 of those. One has 5 shadows and the other has 2 lip glosses, 1 blush and 1 bronzer/contour color (the one I got is for fair & cool so it can be used as either). Throw in a pressed powder compact & some mascara and you are done.

Here is one of the Steppes I have (though I recommend putting an elastic band around them unless they are in a small makeup back. they will try to flip open from time to time).

**And here are the MYSTIKOL's. One of my favorite J.I products. You can do a lot with the powders (I adore Citrine & Smoky Quartz).

I forgot my one, true, Holy of all Holy Grail lipsticks. Clinique's 'Almost Lipstick' in Black Honey. How 90s girl can you get? It is a re-formulated/sheer version of a 1971 Clinique lipstick that they launched in 1989. I was 14 or 15 years old and have had no less than 3 tubes of this at my house since it came out.

I truly love the goth dark burgundy, bronze, brown, and brown-red shades of the 90s. I have more mocha and bronze glosses than you can shake a stick at but Black Honey is still my all time favorite. Only lippy I have ever repurchased. (And it looks great with Blackberry Bloom gloss over it).

    Cute...

    Beautypedia Reviews Black Honey

What she says is true. It was one of the first lipstick/hydrating balm hybrids. That is why I love it. I'm not a 'huge' lipstick person but love sheer formulas and balms. It is universal, build-able and looks different on everyone. (It pulls off a little deeper brown-burgundy on me than this lady). AND what the sales rep told her after she found out every other Almost Lipstick had been discontinued, but this one, is true. If they did away with it, people would riot in the street. Throw on the Doc's and rip it down!!

The 4th woman is the closest match to how it pulls on me.

Eyeshadow Primer - Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Original
Eyeliner - Still searching! I LOVED Shu Uemura's Drawing Pencils but had to find a more affordable replacement. Discovered Kat Von D's Autograph Pencils but now it seems Sephora's discontinuing them
Mascara - Buxom Lash Mascara in Blackest Black...love, love, love this one! Much better than Bare Minerals Lash Domination Volumizing Mascara that gave me raccoon eyes halfway through the day
Tinted Moisturizer - Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Hydrating Gel Cream in 01 Opal (I could likely go a shade darker to 02 Vanilla)
Nails - ORLY Bonder base coat and ZOYA Armor top coat/UV block. OPI, ZOYA, or Essie for color.

Don't have HG products for lip gloss or eyeshadow. Still experimenting with those.

Finally found a replacement eyeliner! Saw Ulta is carrying an Italian line called Catrice now and I picked up 3 of the Kohl Kajal eye pencils in Cleopetrol (blue), Chocwaves (brown), and Take the Greyhound (gray). They glide on wonderfully, but they are kajal, so they can/do smudge. I just have to set the liner with some shadow over it. So glad to find a cheap replacement!

Also discovered that, no, I can't go a shade darker in the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue tinted moisturizer...Vanilla was waaaaay too yellow for my skin tone, so Opal it shall be.

Fifi, thanks for this! I will have to check out the eyeliner powders when I am back at the salon. The Steppes product sounds nifty too, although I can't justify it right now since I really don't have need of it—I don't travel much or go out a whole lot. When it's closed up, how tall is it? Would it fit in a small purse that a person might take to a club?
