Fragrance allergies and sensitive scalp help please!

shishacurlsshishacurls Posts: 88Registered Users
I have very sensitive skin and sensitive sinuses so I can't use anything with fragrances in it. It is already hard to find shampoos and conditioners that are fragrance free, but it is even harder to find fragrance free products that work on curly hair. I feel like I'm the only curly girl that has this issue. Anyone else have fragrance allergies too? Any fragrance free shampoos and conditioners recommendations? Help please! :dontknow:

I'm also allergic to fragrance (it's a migraine trigger for me) and have sensitive skin. I used the Shea Moisture Coconut and Hibiscus line. It has no added fragrance but the coconut oil in it makes it smell like coconuts, which I love. I'm pretty sure Shea Moisture doesn't use fragrance in any of their lines, but I can only speak for the Coconut and Hibiscus. Also, it's relatively cheap and you can get it at Target.

What happens exactly? I have sensitive skin too, but some things work while others don't, so I usually stick to labels with organic, all natural, or sensitive skin on them. I have found that sometimes these don't always work. It causes my skin to be very itchy.

Also, migraines are not an allergy symptom, nonetheless, I can understand why you would want to stay away from strong scents. Have you looked for anything that says "Free and Clear?" I found some stuff at Sally's a long time ago, so I don't know if it's CG or curly hair approved.

One thing you could try though is before you use the product take an anti histamine like Benadryl or Claritin. I actually do this before I exercise. Benadryl is the best over the counter, but it can make you drowsy. Claritin, Zyetec, and Allegro shouldn't though.

Yeah, you're right, it's not technically an allergy but I get so used to referring to it as that because if I tell people it's an allergy they just accept it, but if I tell them it's a migraine trigger they start asking me a million questions about migraines which is a trigger itself, lol. It has the same result anyway, that I need to avoid things with fragrance in them. Also I meant to say I USE Shea Moisture, not USED. It's still my go-to hair care line.
"Free and clear" is usually a good sign that product won't upset your allergies, but definitely still double check anything labelled "sensitive skin." You would think that would mean there wouldn't be any common allergens in them, but some of it does still contain fragrance. Doesn't make sense to me, but I've come across that.

Check out Real Purity. I commented on your other post too about shaving your head.

You could try Avalon Organics Olive and Grape Seed conditioner, which is fragrance free. It has wheat protein in it—not sure how your hair does with protein. I found this conditioner made my hair very soft. (I am a 2a, and the conditioner actually made my hair *too* soft.)

I have the same issue (fragrance allergies). My products are in my siggy. Aubrey Organics is a great brand. Giovanni has some fragrance free products. John Masters is another. Spiral Solutions was willing to put aside fragrance free products for me--hopefully she'll re-open her business. Sweet Curls Elixirs does customized products and using fragrance is optional. The kinky curly line is fragrance free too I believe. Though the custard has some natural fragrance that smells like cake.

I just looked up the Sweet Curls Elixirs. So you buy the products on Estsy? Do the products usually come fragrance free? Or do you have to select an option for fragrance free?

The products are custom made. If she puts in a fragrance, she has the consumer choose it. So there is no automatic fragrance add in the formula, but I always (in buyer's notes) ask for fragrance free just to be on the safe side. I also in the past requested food grade preservative (an option if the preservative bothers you).
    Yup, I buy on Etsy.

I think Jessicurl is available in fragrances and fragrance free options. Desert Essence has a fragrance free line of shampoo and conditioner as well. Shea Moisture uses no fake smells and Kinky Curly doesn't either. I love Curl Junkie but the fake smells are getting on my last nerve...
