Lots of questions

Hey, I need help lol.. I'm a total newbie to the CG method (I literally started it just a few days ago); I've always treated my hair like straight hair, and I've never been too happy with it, so I'm super excited to try out the CG method! It's already a lot curlier than I thought it could be lol!

So, I'm just curious, what do y'all think my hair type is? I'll attach a pic (it's not a great pic, but oh well). :) I honestly just can't tell. The curls on the outside are looser, but the curls under that, the ones that are close to my ears and neck, are tighter.

Also.. Any tips on how to figure out my hair porosity? I stuck a piece of my hair in a cup of water & submerged it in the water and it sunk (was I supposed to let it float on top or submerge it?), but then I did the slip 'n' slide test thing with some strands of hair and most of them felt smooth (I felt a few bumps on a couple of them). Lol it was squeaky. :P anyway, now I'm just confused. I also don't know the density of my hair. But as far as width, I'd say my hair is medium..

One last question: any suggestions for a good gel for my hair? I've been reading & trying to find one but I'm a little overwhelmed with all the different opinions & products. To start the CG method, I got the small trial kit of devacurl products to try them out, & I really like the no-poo & conditioner, but I don't think the gel is doing much for me. I'd like something that makes my curls more defined & helps out with frizz (my hair is horribly frizzy!!).. I would prefer something that's not too expensive, but I don't mind spending a little more if it's really nice & will last long enough.. So any suggestions?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Oh my gosh GREAT hair! I'd say mix of 2b/c and even 3a in there. So your hair may become even curlier as you go on. 5 - 6 months sometimes you don't even believe what a difference there is.

Porosity is pretty much only determinable under a microscope. If you color or lighten at all, you are in all likelyhood some form of porous. If you heat straighten, you are probably more porous. You can send your hair to goosefootprints on Etsy for an analysis. It is often very enlightening especially if you can't figure out anything about products.

Is your hair fine, medium or coarse? It looks like it may also be a mixture of those from the pic? Looks pretty thick (dense).

Honestly there is SO MUCH TO TRY. LOL. I am a product junky. If you wanted to go inexpensively you could first just try some LA Looks gel like the blue (extreme sport) or the yelow (mega mega). You could just use leave in under it (putting back in some conditioner after you rinse out your main conditioner. Some people use a lighter one or you can just put back in some of the same.).

Gosh, so many things you could try. I'd try finding someone like you and see what they use. I think you would greatly benefit from looking at these two gals youtube vids.

    and

as your pattern reminds me of theirs. Their hair is different from each other. But you will still notice cross over techniques and products.

I have a few technique videos which would still work for you.

Do you have Ulta or Target? or a Sally's? Those are great places to get your product from because you can take it back if you don't like something.

Sure glad you are embracing your natural hair because that is an AMAZING head of hair!!! I'm VERY jealous!

Also consider joining the Wavy Hair Community on Facebook. Lots of gals with similar hair there. I also forgot you should really look at Waterlily's videos. I can't tell for sure but in the pic your hair almost looks like a teensy bit looser version of her hair.

Thank you! :) and thank you so much for the info chupie! I'll definitely check out those links.

I've never colored my hair and I never really used to straighten it. I did used to always blow-dry it though. And I think my hair is medium. My mom has coarse hair and mine isn't as coarse as hers, but I don't think it's fine, so I'd say medium.

Anyway, I went to target earlier today (it's right down the road from my house!) and I didn't see ANY of the products I had read about (I kinda wanted to try that Eco styler gel, and there were a few others I was gonna look at) and I was in a rush so I just ended up grabbing the herbal essences totally twisted curl scrunching gel.. I don't know if it's any good or not, but it smelled good so I figured I'd just go for it lol. It does have "peg-12 dimethicone" in it but I read that dimethicones with "peg" in front were water soluble so they're okay for the CG method...right?

I didn't know that you could take hair products back to target if you don't like them! That's good to know.

    Thanks again! :)

A lot of people like that gel. You definitely want to use leave in under it IMO. In fact you'll notice in all of these different videos we all use some kind of curl enhancer/filler/jelly or cream under the gel. Scott Musgrave calls it s filler/ Sealer. And that is kind of what it does. You find even better results. You could try something like Kinky Curly Curling Custard. Or if you are lucky enough to have a Target with Camille Rose or MopTop try Camille arose Curlmaker or Moptop Curling Custard (both lighter than KCCC) under your gel.

Your hair has not been really manipulated so it is probably pretty normal porosity.

So go ahead and try the gel. You may still find you want to try another. Waterlily has a great "drugstore curly hair" vid. I'm usually using higher end stuff you have to order online. Dally's has more and more stuff. You'll see a lot of people using Shea Moisture but that's fairly hit and miss. Plus they have 2000 different lines so it's hard to know what to try. Just see what you think of some of the vids. My hair sounds much like yours texture wise. And maybe Waterlily's because I think Polished Curl is a little finer. My hair is porous though. Sucks up product.

Just see what you think. Techniques like along issues in the videos cross properties. And IMO are at LEAST half the battle.

thanks for the tips :) I'll try it for awhile and see if I like it. Yeah, KCCC was one of the ones I actually wanted to get since I've seen several people mention it, but I didn't see it at target.

Some targets do have a separate "ethnic" section as they call it. You might ask.

Wal Mart has that. I get my Shea Moisture at my local Wal Mart here in Aberdeen but I was up in Lacey with my mom the other day and I found the Seah Moisture in the section marked "Ethnic hair".

I'm definitely a "curly" 2c. Sometimes curly and sometimes just wavy upper layer with a ringlety under layer. My hair has been thick and coarse since birth. Strawberry blonde in color that can and does change depending on the type and amount of light.

All in all, I'm happy with my hair type but almost for sure think yours is prettier. :)
