Ugh parabens

amy51373amy51373 Posts: 1,205Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
I was reading Ashleynicol's thread about products and didn't realize my LA Looks had parabens in it. I've been using it since I started my CG journey and at the time just looking for CG products, since then I've also gone a more healthy route and trying to quit using products with other ingredients, like parabens. I never thought to check my old stuff (UGH again).
Any recommendations for other gels that hold like LA Looks without parabens or silicones? I've tried ECO and didn't have much luck with it. BRHG is a little too hard holding for my taste.
mostly 3a/fine/high porosity/low density
Cleanse: Bosley shampoo and conditioner
Stylers: Boots Curl Cream, Uncle Funky's Daughter, Curl Keeper
Gels: Volumax, Biolage, EcoStyler, BRHG
Shea butter to scrunch out the crunch and seal
Modified CG since Feb 2008

Have you tried Kinky Curly Curling Custard? Many people love that jelly. Some use a small amount of BRHG over top to enhance the hold. Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha is also a natural soft/medium hold gel. I haven't tried Curl Junkie Curl Queen gel but I'm planning on it!!

I use BRHG and find it great for holding my hair, but have you tried diluting it or using a bit less to modify how hard holding it is? Also, I find personally the wetter my hair is when I use gel, or if I diffuse, that takes some of the hardness out of the gel. Technique changes how things work in my hair.

I'm not sure if Aussie Instant Freeze or HESMU have parabens...
3a/3b high porosity, mainly coarse, medium density
Live in Canada- hot summers, freezing winters- dry dry dry
As I am cleansing pudding, soultanicals deep condish, curlsmith cowash, lhdc condish
KCCC, curlsmith soufflé, ufdcm, mga sculpting gel
Scrunch with hair repear towel, then diffuse or air
    Protein- Cnpf

I hadn't thought about adding some water to lessen the hardness of the BRHG and may try that. KCCC isn't hard enough hold for me. I work as a nurse and play outside often with the kids I take care of, so I need something with a little bit of hold in the Missouri humidity. I picked up a couple to try at Sallys' tonight. I know I used Biolage so I grabbed their knock off and the Volumax which I hear is being discontinued. Next time I'm somewhere with the BRHG I'll grab some and try adding some water to it.

Absolutely just dilute BRHG with water. Works great. No parabens in the new formal.

Why does the Volumax Mega gel have to be discontinued...I really like it! Of course I know the BRHG will work, but the Volumax is so much cheaper. I may buy up their stock!

I use a TON of ecostyler and I carry a small tub in my nursing bag to touch up if I frizz throughout the day. ;)

This is from just now winding down my work day. A little frizz and separating in the front because im always pushing it back, but i dont like the way it looks when i clip it. I'm still searching for a hard hold gel that doesn't flake. I use ecostyler clear.

I'm trying to get Ecostyler to work for me. I have some, but I end up not having enough hold and end up with frizz later. I could put a drop of the BRHG with it and see how that holds...I used to do that with some other gel when I started CG. I did get some shea butter yesterday to scrunch out the crunch and help seal my hair but haven't used it yet.

Garnier fructise pure clean gel is very hard hold but I find it impossible to scrunch out stays hard all day. But it works and holds reaally well. I just dont like hard feeling hair.

I think it should be out at all the stores that carry. I buy mine at Ulta. Online might still be old stock though.

Ok thanks! I'll be stateside in a few weeks so I I'll wait to go into an actual store to get some. The ones online still have the parabens in it.

I use a pea size amount of BRHG over a leave in and let it mostly air dry. It feels hard at first then dries to a soft and shiny finish. You only need a few small blobs so I find it very cost effective, seriously, it takes me like a year of daily use to use up a tube. Keep trying with it. Its really the best in all weather but application is the key.
HG: Biosilk Rock Hard Gelee (always and forever)
Cantu Naturals s & c (shampoo 1x a week), use conditioner as a co-wash every day and LI under my gel.

Air dry then diffuse canapy layers only for volume
Coconut oil before/after coloring grays and on ends.

2b/c mix waves/curls - coarse, frizz prone, med. thick, porous, at-home color, protein sensitive but I still need it sometimes, glycerin-sensitive (I think) in high humidity. After 16 years on NC.com I FINALLY figured it out..
