Mixing products: what's your poison

chupiechupie Posts: 5,280Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
So after reading an article with the Kevin Alexander who does Game of Thrones hair, I decided to experiment mixing the Oribe Rough Luxury Soft Paste and Innersense organic beauty Whipped Texturizer. He said start at the neck and spritz water and scrunch the mixture in. I did that in sections and then let it dry and scrunched out. I got nice clumps! I don't think it would work on fresh showered hair (but I'll have to try-who knows) but boy what a nice refresher! It's very soft, natural feeling and moves nicely.

What mixed combos work for you?

I'm still trying things out, Chupie, but I have had luck in the past cocktailing the Innersense Whipped Creme Texturizer with other products. I had a reaction to some protein so stopped using it for a while (it has a lot of protein), but I am ready to get back to cocktailing with it. It added more hold and also gave some weight to my hair, which is nice because I tend to get flyaways.

I am curious about the article that you read. Was the idea just to wet the hair and then scrunch in texturizer?

He mixed wax and putty. But I could tell the idea was to mix, weight, hold and volume. Like we do with crimes and gel. But of course with the pastes and pomades it's just another animal. And I got to thinking, well why is that always just used on longer men's hair. So since I had those two products which were pretty similar to a wax and a volume putty why not try. You sure don't have to use much to get a good result. And it felt light, natural and was soft and touchable.

Today I got loose boticelli curls all over my head (though the photo only shows them flattened out at the end of the day)! I sprayed my hair with homemade henna tea, sevi texturizer, SS strength and shine. I used the SS PT as a LI. Then I put on a mixture (cocktail) of customized SCE crazy curly gel, AO MM, SS CEJ, and gelatin hair gel. I don't know if it was switching up techniques or products, but I had wonderful frizz free curls all over my head! Unfortunately I put on too much product without enough hold and only got a photo at the end of the day. So my curls had flattened out to waves, like this:
Still, I am loving this product combo…. boosts my curls big time.

    I think it looks gorgeous!!!

I'm wondering if I need to do change up my product lineup or something because I did everything the same yesterday and my hair did NOT turn out like it usually does. Maybe the "switching up" helps but I'm so confused as to why!

It is not CG but this is fast becoming my favorite styling tool. Both products have a little silicone way down the ingredient list. but the rest is cg. Even the wax in the paste is PEG. My low poo seems to take care of it fine. At least for refreshing. Have not tried it on fresh washed yet, but could possibly be a good wash and go, which I have never found yet.

Chupie and Curls80, thanks so much for the compliments.

Chupie, your hair prior to scrunching out looks curly! The pattern is very similar to mine in some photos I'd taken.

Curls80, when my hair acts funky it's usually time for a reboot. I clarify, chelate, etc. Henna (in very tiny amounts) helps my hair, too…. makes it nice and full.

With the right cut and products I can look at least 2bish. I really do need a cut. Terribly. Starting to be "triangle head" unless I blow dry it straight. But I so want a Deva cut and just can't right now. It's maddening.

I don't see triangle head…. just lovely hair. You look good with both short and long hair.

And…. I can't resist posting this…. 3rd day hair!!! I didn't do a thing to it, just slept with it in my silk sleep cap. Though there are some scraggly pieces hiding out in back I should take care of. No real curls, waves, and did I mention 3rd day hair! I posted too many photos, but 3rd day hair is like a solar eclipse for me (rare). Too much product to keep the curl, but the product combo is enough to keep the hold for 3 days.

Wow!! Awesome! My triangle happens towards the end of the day. This is post salon cut fixed with some of my own styling. But I could tell she shaped it well. Found a gal who agree to a point cut scissors only and a micro trim. So in fairly happy. Can't wait to fully style it myself. She really didn't have a clue about that but that's ok. They never do. I did. It's really just some scissor point cutting into my hair to lighten the bottom and a micro trim. It came out well
