No Gelcast?

SophiPerSophiPer Posts: 8Registered Users
Hello Curlies!

I recently ran out of LA Looks gel and decided to give the DevaCurl one a try! I absolutely love the smell....but I'm not getting a whole lot of definition. My curls are frizzing out and only look good for about an hour while they dry.

Usually with a gel I get a cast that I can scrunch out later but I haven't gotten one while using this. I use it soaking wet and smooth a palm-full before going back in and scrunching with another palm-full. And then I may apply a bit more to troublesome sections.

Its been humid in my area too, could that be part of the problem? Do I need a sealing product over or under the gel?

Thanks:)

Both Quidad and Devacut products make my hair very frizzy and dry. I believe it is because of the wheat protein which my hair hates.

I always go back to the LALSG with great results.

This goes to show you that ingredients are key because even if the products are made by the best in curly hair, it might not work on your curls.

Deva light gel gives me a hard cast that scrunches out easily, so maybe you just need to use more of the gel than you would with your old one?

Marcie: I hadn't even thought of the wheat thing! I don't think I've used anything with that on my hair so that could be part of the problem.

DrRach: That could be it too! I think its harder to gauge the DevaCurl coverage than LALSG but I'll give that a try and see how it goes.

    Thanks ladies:)

It's loaded with glycerin which attracts all the humidity straight to your hair. Protein usually helps the gel cast form on my hair, in my experience.

Are you using anything under the gel? I find that really moisturizing products tend to affect whether the cast is going to be really crunchy or light enough where I barely have to scrunch out any crunch.

I had only put some more of my conditioner(as a leave in) underneath it. I'm wondering if it does have something to do with the humidity. I have tried other gels with less glycerin and I don't seem to have to same problem....

Do I need to try a leave in specifically underneath it? I'm pretty bad about putting something on, I go right from the shower, with a little conditioner left and then to my gel.

Where I live it's really humid, and I've realized that DevaCurl is a no-go for me because of the glycerin--I was having the same problem as you. But now I use a glycerin-free gel and it's made a world of difference. Even on rainy days, my hair is pretty much frizz free! I never thought it'd be possible! Lol

I have experienced using gels that I was able to scrunch out the crunch, but with the Deva gels it's like they form a gel cast that bonds to my hair and it just won't go away until I wash it out. My hair can handle the use of glycerin and a lot of different ingredients (that are often well talked about) all year round, but it's the complete formulations of the Deva products themselves that leave my hair barely defined, actually add frizz, and dry my hair out terribly. I moved on from the Deva line because it just doesn't work for my hair period, and I am currently using products from lines that actually are way better suited for my hair's overall needs.

Where I live at, it stays hot and super humid almost all year long, and during this Spring going into Summer it has been raining unbelievably here where I live at almost as much as it has been in Houston, and my hair can handle products with and without glycerin in them successfully (even if glycerin is listed high on the list). Has every product that has glycerin in it been a success for my hair? No. Because every product that has glycerin in it is not formulated the same. The same goes for when it comes to the use of products that have protein in them too. I simply go by what my hair tells me about a product period, and if it doesn't work for my hair the way that it's supposed to, then if I am able to get a refund or exchange for the item, then I will surely go ahead and get such ASAP. If i can't then in the trash the product goes.

Maybe try some oil underneath the gel to seal first? That way the humidity has some form of a barrier to your hair.

I'll see if my sister or mom can use it. Their curls are looser and they prefer less hold so it may be perfect for them! I do live in a pretty humid area though so I think that is part of the problem I'm having.

I am glad to hear I'm not the only one having problems with the line though! I did expect it to work better based on the company and the price. Its all good either way:)

And I'll have to give oils a try! I've never really experimented with them since I was worried they would be too greasy.

Since where you live at is pretty humid, then you may surely be possibly experiencing more head sweating than normal, therefore, leaving oil in your hair, in combination with any styler, may certainly be too much. Where I live at, it is extremely humid (as humid as it can possibly get), and it stays this way where I live at almost all year round. With this high humidity, my head is definitely sweats a lot, and on a normal basis, the only way that I can get away with using straight oil in my hair, is when I pre-poo with it. When I have added oil to my hair, during the styling process, my hair was left oily, with a greasy afterfeel. Which is why, I stopped doing such. The only thing that I will use underneath my stylers is a leave in (but that is only when it is based upon need). Otherwise, for the most part, I am able to get away with using one product in my hair on a daily basis, and I am able to get frizz free, defined curls on a consistent basis. Of course it did take me trial and error, to find the best products for my hair. But, it is a process that I truly don't regret going through, because I don't believe in having to do different things in order to make a product work. If a product is a perfect match for ones hair, then it will perform exactly the way it is supposed to period.

This is a great point! I'm definetly still experimenting to find what works best for my hair. But yes, it would be better to find products that work in the first place instead of having to buy more to try and make one that kinda works actually work. So I'll keep hunting:)
