Updating your makeup?

curlypearlcurlypearl Curl ConnoisseurPosts: 12,231Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
Are you doing anything to update your makeup routine (if you wear it)? So far I cannot get into the blue and green polish although I've seen it look pretty on others.

I'm a little confused about what is current in makeup now. I tried contouring which just looked like my face got dirty. At my age, I don't think a cat's eye liner would look great but I'd like to look current. Any suggestions?

Maybe I should go to a dept. store an get a makeover. ??

i do update my makeup from time to time, but no specific guidelines. maybe as my face/skin changes i decide to make changes. i do not follow fashion, just find my own style.
one thing i found recently is yves saint laurent touché éclat radiant -- it's a highlighter that you use say around your eyes -- just below brow, in the corner by your nose, on top of cheekbone. i also use it alongside my nose. it is a unique makeup as when you have the right skin match (and there are soooo many shades, it's best to go to a store) that it blends in soooooo amazingly well that you cannot tell it is there at all, just looks like your skin is super-deluxe if that makes sense. to make sure you have the right shade, apply the tester to the inside of your hand.
my experience with dept store makeovers is that they are out to sell whatever is new in their stock. i avoid them. i have read books by carmindy, bobbi brown, diana jewel (for faces framed by gray hair), etc.

Great response - thanks RBB. I'm sure you are absolutely right about dept. store make-overs. Makes sense!

I'm really bad about trying whatever is pretty. And there is a LOT of pretty out there. I'm in love with eyeshadows now. Urban Decay Naked 3, the Tartelette Palette (only available on the Tarte site now.) loving all the pinks and peaches.

Oh and no full contouring isn't doable (and highly impractical for most anyway) but you'd be surprised how just a wee but you'd be surprised what a difference and little judicious sweeping of contour powder in the cheek hollows and along the jawline and chin makes.

I always forget to use contour powder on my jawline and under my chin, and boy, did I regret it while looking in the mirror at Ulta today.

The only change I've made lately is to wear red lipstick again. I was on a coral or brown kick for long time, but lately I feel like red. I found a long-wearer from Revlon (!) and even though I like the colors I have by NYX and Butter and Tarte better, it's the Revlon that lasts.
  • chupiechupie Curl Connoisseur Posts: 5,280Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
Oo. I've been wearing red. NYX has some great ones. Their Butter Gloss in Cherry Red is a pretty pinky red, their Crayon in Russian Roulette is a true red. And there is another gloss like one calle Apple Crisp that's really a pretty red real similar.

    I can never decide if I prefer a blue-toned red or a warm-toned red.

The nice thing about NYX is you can afford to try both.

I tend to stick to the same colours, same methods, same everything. I'm pretty hopeless with make-up and if I ever do try to change things up a bit it either looks weird to me or barely different!
I've never done any contouring, have no idea what it's meant to do or look like. I watch you tube videos sometimes and watch make-up artists demonstrating but I still don't get it!

For me I look at any spot I wish looked receded (I.e. Along the jaw line) and brush a bit of contour there. Then I buff it out. And a bit right under your blush buffed out makes your cheeks perkier. It doesn't have to be like the Kardashian type contouring vids.

I do update my makeup here and there, keeping in mind that I'm in my 40's. Full contouring is not for me. I'm pretty fanatical about my skin looking like skin, so I rarely use any foundation. When I do, I use it lightly only where I need it (if I have redness around my nose, for example), which means that the foundation I use must be able to provide light coverage and be an exact match. It also *must not* look like I have foundation on. My HG liquid foundation is MUFE Face & Body, and my HG powder foundation is HALO Hydrating Perfecting Powder. I use a stippling brush to apply them both.

I will occasionally use the Laura Mercier highlighting powder in a few spots if I feel that my skin needs brightening. It's an amazing powder. It does exactly what it's supposed to do, and you'd never know it's there.

Where I do experiment a lot is with eyeshadow. Lately, I'm very into matte eyeshadow. I have the Tarte Tartelette matte palette and the Viseart matte neutral palette. I purchased an IT Cosmetics matte palette, but that went straight back. It was awful. The Tarte palette is very, very good, but the Viseart shadows are hands-down the best shadows I've ever used. I plan to get all their palettes as finances permit. They are harder to come by (they are almost always sold out at Sephora.com), and they are expensive ($80), but they are worth every penny.

Why are the Viseart so good?

They are very, very pigmented, buttery smooth, not powdery (no fallout that I can see), and I've never used eyeshadows with such staying power. They blend better than any other eyeshadow I've ever used, and I can still distinctly see each color I use, whether it's two colors or five colors. While I've never used Tom Ford eyeshadow, I've seen reviews from pro makeup artists saying that Viseart is equal to, or better than, Tom Ford. I don't think I'll be buying anything but Viseart shadows from now on. They are definitely expensive, but the pans are large (bigger than the Tarte Tartelette pans), and they're so pigmented that you just don't need much. It will last me forever, so it's good value for the money.

Over the years I've made minor changes. I quit using liquid/cream/mousse type foundations and now use powders. I rarely wear eye shadow anymore. I use lip crayons instead of gloss. I used to like matte makeup but now I like a bit of shimmer in my blushes and bronzers.
The only 'new' thing I've experimented with the last couple years was eyeliner. I like the look of a dark cat-eye eyeliner but it looks ridiculous on me and makes my eyes look smaller. So after some experimenting I now love a thin bright eyeliner (jewel tones in blue, purple, teal; light blue, green, gold). I also use a dark eyeliner under and in my lash line to make my eyelashes look thicker. Now that they make waterproof liquid liners in many colors I'm a happy camper.

    Happy eyeliner camper!

I've been downplaying my eyes lately. They're big, but close together, and they kind of detract from the positives. Recently it's just mascara for the top lashes. (Oh, and I'm trying the L'Oreal version of the illuminating coverup in the inner corners to make them seem further apart. However, I often find eye stuff in corners afterward, which is not ideal.) Face gets the usual treatment: coverup (nose), powder, very light foundation. Lips are red. Red!

That's what I have on today! That thin little line of color makes me happy for some reason. Not even sure other people can see it unless they are standing really close, but I know it's there. : )

I know it's the best, but I thought I'd start with a cheaper version to see if I like the effect.

What's all this talk about rose gold liner? Is this for above the upper lashes?

^Just like regular above the lash line eyeliner, just in a rose gold color.

I noticed how they had just used a shimmery blue green on Connie Britton in Nashville and was total 💡💡💡. When I got the Rose gold on a Birchbox I was ecstatic to try it. I wear it alone or even just above regular liner. It really opens hooded eyes.
