Gel.

I think I need one that isn't heavy.

Recently I've found a good routine but my curls aren't as springy as I'd like and I think it could be my gel as it has hydrogenated castor oil in it. Do you think this would be weighing it down?

I would like one that has medium to strong hold (don't mind scrunching out the crunch) but still leaves me with soft shiny curls :D

You might give Aussie Instant Freeze a try if you haven't already - not quite enough hold for me (but I really need a strong hold) but it scrunches out nice and soft. I like it enough to keep some around. It might be plenty of hold for you!

It does have a polyquat if you are sensitive to such things.

Side note - I've been interested in hydrogenated castor oil, but the fact that oils I've tried sap the spring from my curls has kept me from trying anything containing it. If you do try a castor oil free gel, report back with what you find! :happy8:

Hey Spiral, I'm trying to avoid polyquats as I feel that they make my hair frizz.

I totally understand about the oils though, which is why I can't use an oil to seal. I can use a few in my rinse out though...

I shall report the difference if I find one. It could be why I don't get that much of a crunch on some parts of my hair though.

Hey Rbb! CJ is about the only product line I can't use as I'm in the UK. Such a bummer too as I have only heard good reviews on all their products :( thanks for the rec though!

My hair seems to love castor oil and hydrogenated castor oil. What gel is it?

Gotcha! I don't seem to have as much of an issue with polyquats.

Another gel I like in summertime is Garnier's Pure Clean Gel, which doesn't have a polyquat in it. A little crunchy, maybe? But I bet with a leave in underneath it might not be so bad. It has glycerin, which is why I can only use it in normal dew points. But it is light. And it makes my curls springy.

I want to say that HESMU doesn't have a polyquat in it, but I think it has Cyclopentasiloxane (evaporates off hair?) and PEG 8 Dimethicone (water soluble). I'm curious about it but haven't tried it out yet.

Yeah but I've heard so many good reviews about HE gel that I too am a bit curious.

Oooo I'll have to try garnier gel then, do you know what it looks like?

They just redesigned the packaging over here - kind of a clearish/light green tube with a dark green cap (not the really bright green that they like to use for their other products).

It's labeled "Pure Clean Gel," that should give it away for sure!

I have serious polyquat issues and use Aussie Instant Freeze with no problems. I personally find polyquat-4 to be not so bad. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in :)

HESMU has 2 formulas. The one out on the shelf at my Walmart right now is identical to Aussie Instant Freeze, minus 1 ingredient. So that formula has a polyquat. I'm not sure about the other one. I think the silicone free one is old? Unless they brought it back?

Haha, thanks Spiral, I am sure I'll find it now!

Amy, what polyquats do you find troublesome? Might explain while curl keeper failed lol.

Brit, what ingredients are in quidad and how much is it exactly?

    Ouidad:
Water, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Panthenol (Provitamin B5), Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Extract, Actinidia Chinensis (Kiwi) Fruit Extract, Lawsonia Inermis (Henna) Leaf Extract, Wheat Amino Acids, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer, Propylene Glycol, PEG-60 Almond Glycerides, PEG-12 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Polyquaternium-28, Glycerin, PPG-26-Buteth-25, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, PVP/DMAPA Acrylates Copolymer, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, DMDM Hydantoin, Fragrance.

It's worth noting there are a couple of silicones in here, but they're very low in the ingredients list and I've never had any trouble with build-up. I use a VERY gentle low-poo (Shea Moisture) and it removes everything fine.

I live in the UK, so for me it's slightly pricer as I can't get it in stores. I buy it online from beautybay.com. The regular 250ml is £20 and the super duper jumbo size (450ml) is £34.

I always buy the super jumbo size (LOL) and it lasts me around six months! So I guess it's actually pretty decent value when I think about it like that

10 & 11 cause me the most problems. any other number I've had no or minimal problem with.

Allie - what are your dew points usually when you use the Ouidad? I still have mine, deciding whether or not to try again or just get rid of it.

I have actually had a lot of luck with Giovanni LA Natural Styling Gel when paired with a good LI and some Living Proof Prime Style Extender. A little goes a long way, and I have had trouble finding gels without glycerin and polyquats in my area and that was my best option.

I tried KCCC but dear lord it instantly made my hair feel...sitcky? I put it on sopping wet hair and my hair just loathed it for some reason and felt horrible. I have never had so much strand separation. I looked like I stuck my finger in an electrical outlet. :P Perhaps it will play better with different products, but it has definitely gone under the bathroom sink for now.

Hey Brit! My hair gets weighed down with any type of silicone so I am afraid to try this and I too live in the Uk so feel it may be too expensive. Bummer!

Malobee it sounds like our hair acts in a similar way so I'll have to try the Giovanni. I have got a tub of ecostyler Krystal in my bathroom too, haven't tried it properly though...has anyone got any experience with this gel? Is it hard hold?

A little off topic here, as I found the (older?) silicone free version yesterday as well (but held off on picking it up). Sixelamy, have you compared HESMU and AIF side by side? Do they differ significantly? I like AIF ok; don't know if HESMU is a stronger hold or different in any way.

I found Aussome Volume too but don't know if anyone has a lot of experience with it. At some point I will have to find a humectant free strong hold gel for the low dew points.

Yes, I even took a picture of it and posted it to a thread on this forum. Only difference is 1 ingredient added to AIF at the bottom of the list.
