In his autobiography I Am Not Spock, Nimoy wrote that he based it on the Priestly Blessing performed by Jewish Kohanim with both hands, thumb to thumb in this same position, representing the Hebrew letter Shin (ש), which has three upward strokes similar to the position of the thumb and fingers in the salute. The letter Shin here stands for El Shaddai, meaning "Almighty (God)". Nimoy wrote that when he was a child, his grandfather took him to an Orthodox synagogue. There he saw the blessing performed and was impressed by it.[1]

Just makes me so sad. I can truly say I probably wouldn't be the
person I am without the life he breathed into Spock. That character was exceptionally important to 5, 6,7 year old me (and beyond really).

And here is an example that I was not the only person. Check out this letter he wrote to a young bi-racial girl who wrote him asking for advice.

Chupie, thanks for posting that great letter. Nimoy clearly thought a lot about it before he wrote it and it must have meant so much to the young girl. So glad you posted that - it really touches me. I will miss him and the unforgettably noble character Spock.

RIP, Spock. Star Trek was groundbreaking for its time and Spock was one the reasons why I watched week after week. It made living in my small town bearable. People of every hue working and living together, even loving each other, what a concept!

I loved Spock because I tend to have a very logical view of everything (and that's not always an easy thing) and I loved Leonard because he seemed like a smart interesting guy. I'm very sad that he is gone.
