Wedding unity ceremony ideas?

sixelamysixelamy Registered Users Posts: 4,157 Curl Novice
I need creative and unique ideas, please!

Our wedding is in 4 months... eeeekkk! It's coming fast! I still can't come up with an idea for the unity ceremony portion. We don't want to do sand or candles or anything you see everyday at a wedding. I do want us to make something, but I don't know what we could combine. I want to be able to keep it forever, look at it, and say "hey, we made that during our wedding ceremony!"

Any ideas? No sand, no candles, no knots or braids, not anything cheesey. Our wedding is outside. Painting is too messy. And we don't want to combine soil in a tree pot and plant it. Sorry pinterest, you've exhausted ideas.

Do you guys have any hobbies, interests you could incorporate.

Friend are big sailors, and they had an ore with a passage on it. They did a sort of family pledge (both came into the marriage with kids) and they all signed it. It now hangs in their front hall.

He likes the Blackhawks and guns. I like knitting and anything crafty. We are polar opposites, so would be great to incorporate our opposite taste into something.

Congratulations, sixelamy! Could you possibly pre make a few Blackhawks or hockey related things to assemble together during the ceremony? That way it's his interest used as/combined into a craft (your interest)?

Well, I don't want more hockey stuff hanging around the house. However, I would incorporate a piece of it. I'll have to think on this one, it's a toughie.

What I reeeaally wanted to do was have us shoot a target, and frame the target. However, I don't think the man that owns the property would appreciate us shooting on his lawn ;)

Do you guys drink? I always thought the writing notes and sealing them with a wine bottle to drink & read on your first anniversary was a fun idea.

    How exciting!
The only wedding tradition I know is this. Maybe you could make a straw broom beforehand and keep the bristles scented and hang it over your door or something...

    Yay wedding stuff! 💍
I'm not really familiar with unity ceremonies, I've only been to church weddings. I had to laugh at your not wanting more hockey stuff around the house. There was stinky hockey gear all over our apartment. Part of our move was about no longer having stinky hockey pads in our living space.
Anywho I'll put my thinking cap on for you.
Do you have colors picked out yet?

Hmm looks like some people planted a rose bush. It's the only thing I've found so far that didn't make me want to barf but I'm not sure it's very "you". I will keep looking.

Have you talked to the property owner about your idea? What if you used something like a paint gun?

Thanks for the ideas everyone, and please keep them coming.

The unity thing is pretty common, even in church weddings. In a church, it's mainly when the couple lights the candle together. Most people pour sand into a container, but it's boring and everybody does that.

My fiance drinks, but I don't. I'm not a fan of the notes, because it's not something we can readily display. Now, I would be all for an idea of putting notes into something we make - weither it be a framed picture or collage of something, or put it inside something else, but maybe not a bottle.

Broom jumping is definitely not something that we would ever do. I've never seen it done, but of course I've never been to an african american wedding. I saw it on pinterest or some place yesterday and that was the first time I'd ever seen it. It seems weird for a white and half mexican people to do, considering the origin.

Paintball gun sounds awesome, but I'm afraid of getting paint on my dress. I wanted to do a unity painting, but I can kinda be a little awkward all the time, and I don't trust myself.. lol. We have not talked to the property owner about the shooting, but I might email him and ask. The fiance isn't comfortable with doing this though. I highly doubt the property owner would be pleased with the idea, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

I'm so stumped. It's hard coming up with something original, as it's all been done before. We aren't the classic couple, so it's kinda difficult. I propose the idea of taking things we've kept from each other and making a collage, but of course he doesn't like that idea. Ugh. Getting 2 picky people together is sometimes not a good idea :p

ETA: Oh! The colors. Each bridesmaid is wearing a different color - all pastels of pink, lavender, blue, and minty green.

I have white sand and seashells from a beach in Florida that we went to a couple years ago on a trip right after we got serious. (Found out they had opened my luggage to look at the sand, probably thinking it was coke or something lol) I was thinking maybe we could make something with those, but then again, it resembles the sand thing. But the material at least means something to us. Gah, I don't know! And what if the container falls or gets shaken up somehow, and then it looks crappy later on.

I googled unity ceremony afterwards and felt a little silly, it seems pretty common. Not sure how I didn't know about it before. Maybe because I've only been to two weddings in my whole life? Idk.
Paint on your wedding dress would definitely be a no go.
Do not feel bad about being picky! You want it to be meaningful and special for you both!
I saw something online where a couple did a volcano. Seems random. Another couple used what looked like water but it changed color when it was mixed together. Not sure how they did that.

Thanks, I'm excited to see everyone in their dresses and how nicely colorful it will be!

I had though about mixing colored water and oil together into a bottle so they separate, but are contained within the same vessel. But will that go bad after a while? I mean, is that something that will still look nice in 20 years? Or will it be filled with mold and growing gremlins?

We have kind of an opposites theme going with the wedding, it would be a nice play on that.

There's a Mexican wedding tradition called "el lazo". A variation on that might suit your needs. It is sometimes done with a rosary or orange blossoms but you could do it with any flower.

I am just going to throw this out there even though I don't think it's your style...I have always thought it would be fun to sing a duet with your new spouse.
    Fun and terrifying.

It's not something we can keep, although we could have a picture of it to keep - I saw on a google search of offbeat ideas, this couple ate a sandwich - kinda like on Lady and the Tramp. That's awesome.

I have no idea about what a unity ceremony is :book:, had never heard about it other than the wedding itself being a unity ceremony.

What about putting beads together into a necklace you can wear? I have no idea if that is considered unity ceremony.
  • Fifi.GFifi.G Registered Users Posts: 15,490 Curl Neophyte
Are you sure you even want to do the unity ceremony? It's not a must. The customs outside of religious/cultural are relatively new. I started seeing more and more couples light candles in the 80s and sand was progressing in the 90s but several couples still took a pass, especially after watching a fee couples try to light candles for 30 minutes :) *I always felt bad for them. Look of... Our marriage will fail if this doesn't work!!! No, not really. lol

I always thought the wedding was unity enough and honestly, like you, can not think of anything I would like to do when I read over unity ceremony ideas.

Yes I do want to do it, hence the question ;). I think we may just end up doing a painting. I've seen it done with those bottles that have the point on them, so hopefully I won't spill on my dress! I want something we can display from our ceremony.

    Hey Congrats!

    How about sky lanterns?

You both could let them go and then have everyone do it at the end. And then have one for yourself as a keepsake?

Here are some examples. :) HTH!

Sky lanterns are beautiful. An amazing picture of you lighting one would qualify as a keepsake. Especially if it is blown up and framed. Not too different from the target idea or anything else you would have framed to look at.

The painting idea does sound neat, if you can find the best way to avoid a mess or accident. Do they make wedding aprons? Hehehe. Throw one on, just to be on the safe. Oversized hair stylists cape perhaps.
