Magnesium oil/lotion?

sixelamysixelamy Registered Users Posts: 4,157 Curl Novice
Does anybody use magnesium oil or lotion? I found a recipe online, and I'm going to try the lotion. My only question is - can I apply this anywhere, and how much?

After tracking my food for a bit, I noticed I only get 25% RDA of magnesium a day. I'm also irritable/moody all the time, fatigued, get bad cramps without the pill, and my muscles are always so dang tight. After injuring my back, my left leg has been in a constant spasm or something (it's 2x as tight as the other leg) and I've gone numb. I haven't been able to feel half my foot and parts of my leg in quite a while. Some days are better than others. I decided to pick up a magnesium supplement after work yesterday, and since taking it last night I can feel parts of my foot and leg that I haven't felt in a year! The only downside is, I picked up one that has vitamin C (citric acid) so it's making my reflux something awful. Had a hard time falling asleep last night because of it. So, this brings me to finding magnesium lotion. I just wonder which is better?

I take 500 mg. mag every night because I have to be on a high calcium diet, so the mag. helps avoid constipation. I've read that it's good for bone health also.

I'm not one to take a lot of supplements, mainly because the "authorities" keep changing their minds - it's good, then it's bad, it saves you from this, then it causes that, if you know what I mean, but I do find the magnesium helpful and I haven't had any bad side effects.

Mine is from a health food store and is manufactured by Sundown. It doesn't have vit. C. I also have reflux so I know exactly what you are talking about. Sorry - no info on mag oil, but I do recommend the mag tablet. Good luck!!!

i've been taking a calcium supplement for about a year now, because I don't eat much dairy. So having a 25% magnesium intake is probably not good! I like the powder form (which is what I have now), because I like to control the amount I take, plus I have a hard time swallowing pills and don't like to. They have without the vitamin C,, but I don't want to have both.

I've read magnesium helps with acid reflux? I wonder if that's true?

Good question re: magnesium helping reflux. I don't know about that. I take generic drugstore nexium (omeprazole) every other day for reflux. I used to take it every day, but I'm much better now so I've cut down.

It couldn't hurt to up your mag intake, especially if you are taking calcium supplements. How do you take the powder - do you mix it in water?

Good luck with this - post back when you have a chance and let me know if you are taking it and if it is helping. :love2:

Yes, kathymack. I ordered some flakes and plan to make my own lotion with it this weekend. I've heard rave reviews about it. Just in the past 2 1/2 days of taking my magnesium supplement, my muscles have loosened up considerably!! And my anxiety has been so much lower. It's like night and day difference. I just don't know how much to apply, or how often.

Currently I take Natural Vitality Calm w/ calcium.

curlypearl - I add it to a couple ounces of hot water and mix in til it stops fizzing, then add some more water to fill my mug up. Then I follow it with some water to make sure all the citric acid got down into my stomach. I didn't have any issues sleeping last night, so maybe it was the tacos that I had the night before that caused me issues.

Sixe, for the reflux, could you take the mag earlier in the day right after eating so that the citric acid has a place to land. Food will help dilute the citric acid.

Also, sleeping on your left side if you can manage it, is supposed to help prevent nighttime reflux. Not sure about this.

What kind of calcium are you taking? If you take calcium carbonate (like Tums) it is designed specifically to counteract reflux. By the way it is the CARBONATE, not the calcium which works against reflux, but you get the benefit of calcium also. I hate chewing the pills so I break them up and swallow with water. It works well for me.

You can tell I've had reflux for a few years. I had it really bad at first and was on very high doses of prescription meds. Much better now :thumright:

I havent had any problems since the other night. Before that I hadn't had an episode for a couple of weeks. I've been eating healthier, but for some reason herbs/spices really kick it up. I always fall asleep on my left side. Tums do nothing for me. Zantac does nothing for me. I don't have heartburn, I have the LPR. You're supposed to take magnesium on an empty stomach, I guess it's poorly absorbed. Yesterday I took it in the morning. Today I took it in the morning and then again when I got home from work. I've been starting small and upping very slowly. Magnesium is supposed to help sleep, I have still yet to see if it does, although I slept great last night - minus the cat waking me up to cuddle at 3am.

Sixe, I'm so glad you mentioned that magnesium should be taken on an empty stomach. I never knew that and have been taking it after dinner!

Hope your LPR is better. I know some singers who have that problem and are very vexed by it.

Maybe we should have a reflux thread - anyway - good luck to you!

Wouldn't be a bad idea to have a thread.

I think pretty much every supplement is better on an empty stomach. I went up to 1tsp today of my powder and man, is it cleaning me out! Not like in the bad way, it definitely helps digestion, that's for sure.

I got my flakes today! Going to make some oil tomorrow, and possibly put it into some lotion. I hope it helps my one leg that's super tight, and my low back.

ETA: I just made some magnesium oil (magnesium melted in boiled water and cooled), and OMG!! I applied it to the bottom of my foot that is always so tight and numb, and now my foot and ankle are much looser and I have more feeling on the sole of my foot and in my ankle. I was just talking with my fiance about it and I put some on his upper back. He's not one to believe in my "holistic" mumbo jumbo, but he told me that his back is a lot looser too. I had always heard and known epsom salt is good for sore muscles, so it makes sense. The flakes I got I think are magnesium chloride.

Natural Calm is a magnesium supplement and it's awesome. You can get up to 81% of the magnesium you need in a day from a small cup of "tea". I drink it before bed. I've been on it for about 6 months and it's really helpful. You can get it on amazon. I use the Raspberry Lemon, but my kids hate that flavor. There is also Lemon, Orange, Unflavored, etc.

Do you find it makes you sleepy? I took it in the morning yesterday and had to come home from work, because I got shakey and could barely keep my eyes open. Well, for one I needed to eat, the shakes went away with some crackers - but I came home and slept for an hour and still felt like I hadn't slept in days. Maybe I'll start taking it at night :) I take the Natural Calm w/ calcium.

I don't know if its the mag oil or changes in eating (even though I've had Chipotle and pizza), but I have not had reflux issues while sleeping in a week. I have so much more energy, I don't hurt after working out, and my chronic back pain from my herniation and arthritis is almost non existent. I'm also getting feeling back when I've been having nerve numbness for the past year. Doc said it was my anxiety - which pissed me off when he said it because its ridiculous. I went through MRIs of pretty much my entire body and nobody said a word about maybe you are deficient in something. Thanks doc. They always fail me. Been failing me for the past 6 years.

I skipped it yesterday morning, and my muscles started getting tighter, I was more stressed at work, and my anxiety peeked it's ugly head in again, after a week of bliss. I don't think I will be skipping anymore ;)

    Kathymack,
How much do you add to your FSG? Does it irritate your scalp as it is left on for days?
    Thanx,

Magnesium is known for causing drowsiness. My doctors who recommended it would say to take it at night because of this effect.

I actually took for years and then I decided to see what happened without it and there is no change. But I recently got some mag oil to experiment with, I've heard it absorbs better through the skin than the digestive tract.

Also for the pills (and presumably flakes drank in water) some of them are not very bio-available and some types are more so, but since I stopped taking it I don't remember anymore which were better (mag ox, mag cit. etc)

Didn't get the email notice that there was a question on this thread. I add 1 t of magnesium flakes to a cup of FSG.

As it happens, I haven't been on nc.com that much of late. Be getting into EOs and making my own skin products. I've made the magnesium body butter from wellness mama Magnesium Body Butter Recipe - Wellness Mama It's really a good way for dermal application of magnesium, which can cause itchiness and flake.

Thanks for the quantity to add to FSG. Would this be to increase curl def?

I've also been "playing" with a few essential oils. Mostly attempting to find relief from painful floating rib syndrome. Kinesio tape was 98-99% effective until I developed a fungal rash (under my breasts while in cardiac intensive care without my bra) that wicked to the kinesio tape and wildfire ensued. My cardiologist wanted my PCP to treat, he would not; took 3 months to get in to see dermatologist, by then I had developed an allergy to the tape's hypoallergenic adhesive--severe reaction, needed direct application of prednisone crushed and mixed in xylocaine gel that my allergist mixed!!! All clear since April.

I used to be allergic to the adhesive on bandages. They've changed a lot through the years, so I rarely have problems anymore. I know you'll be really careful in the future. Hope you're able to find something that works for you.

I do think the magnesium flakes help with curl definition.

If you use the EOs, be really careful about safe dilution. I know when I used them to scent my hair products, I just added them. I'm really lucky I didn't have issues. I've started taking online courses, joined several FB groups and read A LOT. You have to rotate what you're using, so you don't sensitize to the oils.

I alternate btwn mag oil and Epsom salts in the tub (sometimes fragranced bath salts which also contain mag). I also take supplements when I remember. Not the mag oxide that you find in the supermarket, but the mag glycinate and mag malate). I have fibro.

I recently started making my own oil. Despite being on supplements, I started getting nonstop Charlie horse cramps. I upped my supplements too. Still getting the charlie horses but the oil is amazing. It definitely absorbs into your body, gives you that sleepy effect. Since you can't overdo oral supplements, this seems like a great way to get in more magnesium. It was thanks to this thread that I thought of mag oil…. so wanted to say thanks for the topic. :)
