Do you have a song?

Fifi.GFifi.G Registered Users Posts: 15,490 Curl Neophyte
While watching The Best of Me last night I became sentimental when the two, young, first lovers were discussing the need to "have a song". I remember having that conversation at 16 with my first love. It was mandatory but it took a few years for the song to find us. It's from the early 50s and has been sung by many different people over the years. I'll share Patsy Clines version

Just remember darlin' all the while, 'You Belong to Me'. I'd be so alome with out you. Maybe you'd be lonesome too, and blue...
http://youtu.be/PSbgZwP85RE

Do or have you had a song with a special someone and if so, what is it?

Bonus questions: In the great tradition of soundtracks to your life, do you have any other songs that you associate wonderful or negative experiences/memories with? I know I hate the band Rancid. I can not stand to hear them. It reminds me of a very rough period in my life.

George Michael's 'A Different Corner' is our song. I actually have no recollection of how it became our song, my SO doesn't even like it. I like it but admit it is a bit cheesy! Nevertheless I had the words 'turn a different corner' engraved on a bangle a few years ago (our names are engraved on the inside, too pukey to have them on show!).

I hate country, and sadly a country song is "our song". My fiancé and I danced to it at his cousin's wedding and he sang it to me and made me cry. That's the first time he's ever sang me a song :love7:

Then we danced to it at my friend's wedding and he sang it and made me cry.

Now we are going to dance to it at our wedding for our first dance. And I will cry. lol

A lot of songs have associations for me - good and bad. Some just bring up random memories. Music provokes lots of feelings and memories for me. Way too many to name.

I don't have one but this is my boyfriend's song for us - "Make Me Better". And video. Not something I would have picked but it's cute. He just recently mentioned it to me but it's been "our song" in his mind for a long time.

Awww. I love the stories. :love2:

I was around 19 when YBTM became 'our song'. We were broken up at the time but he asked if I wanted to go watch a movie. The song came on, we looked at each other and that was that. Back together and we finally had a song which was a relief to me because I used to name songs and he'd say... Nope! No! Nope! That's not it.

Six, I am the same way. A song will come on and take me back to an exact moment in time. There are few I really can not stand to listen to. It has to remind me of absolutely miserable times that I can't stand to re visit, and I am one who does not mind to open up old wounds via song. I'll let it bleed. No trigger warnings needed in my world.

Do you remember when we used to sing? Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah. Just like that. Sha la la la la la la la la la la dee dah. La dee dah.

I'm glad you threw theme songs into the mix. Green Eyed Lady (passions lady. Dressed in love, she lives for life to be) by Sugarloaf is one of mine.

ETA: I have to love that song. It's a requirement and quite nice because I always felt there is a disproportionate number of songs about green eyes compared to brown and blue.

My bestie swears Fake Plastic Trees by Radiohead is my theme song. It always makes him think of me.

The first Mr ex-perri and I used to sing James Ingram's Just Once to each other. It truly was our song (that and paula abdul's forever your girl- to this day his email is fyghisname).

A peek into our dysfunction, read these lyrics

    I did my best
But I guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here we are back where we were before
    Seems nothing ever changes
    We're back to being strangers
    Wondering if we oughta stay
Or head on out the door

Just once can't we figure out what we keep doing wrong?
Why we never last for very long
    What are we doing wrong?
Just once can't we find a way to finally make it right?
Make the magic last for more than just one night
If we could just get to it
I know we could break through it

    I gave my all
But I think my all may have been too much
'Cause Lord knows we're not getting anywhere
Seems we're always blowing whatever we've got going
And seems at times with all we've got
    We haven't got a prayer

Just once can't we figure out what we keep doing wrong?
Why the good times never last for very long
    What are we doing wrong?
Just once can't we find a way to finally make it right?
And make the magic last for more than just one night
If we could just get to it
I know we could break through it

Just once I want to understand
Why it always come back to good-bye
Why can't we get ourselves in hand?
    And admit to one another
That we're no good with out the other
Take the best and make it better
Find a way to stay together

Just once can't we find a way to finally make it right?
Make the magic last for more than just one night
I know we can break through it
If we could just get to it

    Just once

If we could get to it

    Just Once...

Make the magic last for more than just one night!!! Yep. I know that one. FYG is just cute, though. :)

I'd like to meet someone who has a really messed up song like I hate you!!! Or Rootless Tree by Damien Rice. And this leans on me just like a rootless... Eff you, eff you, eff you and all we've been thru I said leave it, leave it, leave it cause it's nothing to you amd if you hate me, hate me, hate me just hate me so good that you could let me out, let me out, let me out of this hell when you're around.

That actually reminds of a past relationship moment and is a great song but not exactly a romantic interlude.

I had a moment with that song in the 90s

Yeah. All is quiet on New Year's Day. A world in white gets underway. I want to be with you. Be with you, night and day. Nothing changes on New Year's Day. On New Year's Day

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

Under a blood red sky. A crowd has gathered in black and white.
    Arms entwined, the chosen few.
    The newspapers says, says
Say it's true, it's true and we can break through. Though torn in two. We can be one

    I, I will begin again
    I, I will begin again

    Oh, oh. (X6)

Ah, maybe the time is right
    Oh, maybe tonight

I will be with you again
I will be with you again

And so we're told this is the golden age.
And gold is the reason for the wars we wage. Though I want to be with you.
Be with you night and day. Nothing changes. On New Year's Day. On New Year's Day. On New Year's Day

    *******************
This was a huge one for me. I can remember listening to it over and over and over. I had a few really good guy friends who would sit with me or put me in the car and pop the tape in while we drove around and talked. No judgements. They had been thru it too. It's Tori Amos Tear in Your Hands.

All the world just stopped now. So you say you don't wanna stay together anymore. Let me take a deep breath babe. If you need me, me and Neil'll be hangin' out with the dream king. Neil says hi by the way. I don't believe you're leaving cause me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream. I think it's that girl. And I think they're pieces of me you've never seen. Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen well.

All the world is all I am. The black of the blackest ocean and that tear in your hand. All the world is danging...Dangling... Danglin for me darlin
you don't know the power that you have with that tear in your hand.
    Tear in you hand.

Maybe I ain't used to maybes smashing in a cold room. Cutting my hands up every time I touch you. Maybe maybe it's time to wave goodbye now. Time to wave goodbye now. Caught a ride with the moon. I know I know you well, well better than I used to. Haze all clouded up my mind in the daze of why it could've never been . So you say and I say, You know you're full of wish and your "baby baby baby babies" I tell you they're pieces of me you've never seen. Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen.

All the world is all I am . The black of the blackest ocean and that tear in your hand. All the world is danglin... Dangling...danglin' for me darlin. You don't know the power that you have with that tear in your hand. Tear in you hand. With that tear in your hand

Actually, Tori got me through quite a lot. This one got me thru some of the rough parts of my ex's addiction.

    Putting The Damage On
    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qq5EyB1IO5w

Glue, stuck to my shoes. Does anyone know why you play with an orange rind? You say you packed my things and divided what was mine. You're off to the mountain top. I say her skinny legs could use sun but now I'm wishing for my best impression, of my best Angie Dickinson, but now I've got to worry cause boy you still look pretty... When you're putting the damage on

    (Take it high, high, high...)

Don't make me scratch on your door
I never left you for a banjo.
I only just turned around for a poodle
    and corvette. And my impression
    of my best Angie Dickinson.
But now I've got to worry cause boy you still look pretty.
When you're putting the damage on

I'm trying not to move it's just your ghost passing through. I said
I'm trying not to move it's just your ghost passing through. It's just your ghost passing through and now I'm quite sure. There's a light in your platoon. I never seen a light move like yours can do to me. So now I'm wishing for my best impression of my best Angie Dickinson. But now I've got to worry cause boy you still look pretty, To me but I've got a place to go. I've got a ticket to your late show, And now I'm worrying cause even still you sure are pretty. When you're putting the damage on. Yes. When you're putting the damage on. You're just so pretty when you're putting the damage on.

I do love how people can interpret songs different ways. I like reading the comments on that one. Some see the first line as a metaphor for an old and comfortable relationship. To me, it was not being able to go/leave him alone. Not unless I took my shoes off for a bit, which makes the photo on the album cover brilliant. She's barefoot with muddy feet. My favorite part of the song is ... I'm trying not to move it's just your ghost passing thru. Again, some see that as an old relationship you can't move on from. To me it was a reference to the person I knew and loved disappearing before my eyes. Going, losing himself, changing due to addiction but I would still catch glimpses of him. Le Sigh. There was not a bad song on this.

We danced to Beauty and the Beast at our wedding, so I guess you could call that our song.

He also says that Avenged Sevenfold's "Dear God" reminds him of me.

Pretty much every love song reminds me of him, so picking just one would be hard.

Back in high school we said that Andy Griggs' "And She Thinks She Needs Me" was our song.

We've had so many throughout the years. I'm sure we'll have many more! =)

I can only think of 2 boyfriends I had 'songs' with. One was Roundabout by Yes. The other was Radar Love by Golden Earring.
My own personal song has always been and will always be Kashmir by Zeppelin.

What a damn good song to have! One of my all time favorites but I can say that about 3000 songs. I can't pick just one. Does almost everything Prince ever wrote count?

The first song I remember hearing on the radio, loving, and screaming for my mom to turn up (like the car stereo in a 1970 something boat of a Pontiac was going to break the windows. She never got it loud enough for me) while dancing in the backseat was Prince singing I Feel For You. I was young and loved a lot of music already but someone else always put it in front of me. That one was mine.

Wild Card/Side Track. I had a lot of fun asking people what their first 45 was on Facebook one day. I still remember mine. It was my first non kiddy-free to be you and me- music of my very own and I got it for my birthday. I kept playing it for people at my party. I'm sure everyone above 60 loved that but all I cared about at that point was the chorus, the music and Stings hotness.

Police: De, doo, doo, doo. De, da, da, da (1980)

    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7v2GDbEmjGE

Poets, priests and politicians have words to thank for their positions. Words that scream for their submission and no one's jamming their transmission. Cause when their eloquence escapes you. Their logic ties you up and rapes you

De do do do/de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do/de da da da
Their innocence will pull me through
De do do do/de da da da
Is all I want to say to you
De do do do/de da da da
They're meaningless and all that's true

    *****
Somehow that question evolved into picking favorite songs by particular bands/musicians and I decided then that someone would have to point a gun at me to choose when it came to Prince, The Cure, The Police... Several others and I'd always regret my answer when I gave just one.

^ Aww. I liked that song. It was incredibly popular when I decided my first love & I needed a song. It came on the radio one night as his brother was driving us around while we made out in the back of the mini van. It's the first one I asked about but that wasn't it.

I wouldn't say it's officially "our song", but The Joker by Steve Miller Band was playing the first time I met my boyfriend. I'd picked it out on the jukebox earlier that night and he started talking to me about it while his friend was sort of unsuccessfully hitting on me.

I had a rather sweet moment last night and thought of this thread. It was about 2am and I was snuggled up on the couch with my first love. He got on his phone for a moment, turned it up as loud as it would go and played our song. It was the Bob Dylan version of You Belong to me, which was the version we heard together the first time (20 years ago). Moments like that make you realize why finding & having "a song" seems so important when you are young & (not so) goofy.
