Bad ingredient?

I got a face wash at a little country store and it has vegetable shortening. Is it a bad ingredient?

I wouldn't say it's a "bad ingredient" because it essentially just a moisturizing agent derived of vegetable sources so it's better than regular shortening in my opinion. I would say to stay weary of how your skin reacts to it and go from there. :)

Ah. Ok. I just can't help but think of lard when I see the word shortening.

If it is a soap-based wash, the vegetable shortening saponifies greatly and provides good bubbles and conditioning due to the fat content. So no, it is not a bad ingredient, alternatively it is not a very stable one.

So here are the ingreds in order.
WaTer, olive oil, coconut oil, Vegetable shortening, lye, baby castile soap, glycerin, frankincense and orange essential oil.
So castile is the only soap?

Castile soap is soap made of pure olive oil and a lye process. I'm not sure why they put castile soap in that product. The whole thing is soap. The only thing in your product that didn't turn into soap is the essential oil and glycerin. - Although all soap naturally produces glycerin during the saponification process.

So, there is little to no actual vegetable shortening in your product. During the saponification process (the process it goes through after adding the lye) it turns into soap.

Can you tell I'm a soap maker? lol

    Thanks for the replies.
I don't know jack about soap. I'll have to keep reading your reply to try & understand. Lol
Maybe the maker tried listing things as how they came about or might've during the process? IDK
I'm guessing this is bad then, being all soap. :-(

@Betty_Boop I think you would really enjoy Chagrin Valley soap bars! Or their information about soap if anything. Definitely check it out. Soap is sometimes really great depending on your needs and preferances of course :)

It's confusing, sorry lol. There's different ways to list it depending on the state you live in. In this case, since the maker included lye, this is all the ingredients that go into it before it turns into soap.

I second Chagrin Valley, they make some really good soap bars!
