Strong hold drugstore gel

wavesandsmileswavesandsmiles Registered Users Posts: 59 Curl Novice
Could anyone recommend a strong hold drugstore gel available in Canada that doesn't have glycerin and is CG?
Other than Aussie Instant Freeze gel- I am not a fan of Aussie products

I've been using Boo Curl Defining Gel but it hasn't been working well lately, I'm wondering if it's the glycerin + the weather lately. Also the hold was never as strong as I would have liked so I'm just looking for something new.

Thanks!

You could try the Herbal Essences Set Me Up gel, it says it's hard hold but for me it was more of a medium. There seem to be two formulations floating around, one with cones and one without, so check the ingredients if you're doing the CG method. Walmart has their Equate brand sports gel which is supposed to be comparable to lalsg, but I've never tried it so I can't give personal experience. If there's a Sally's near you, you could try the Volumax Mega gel. Our Sally's stores don't carry everything available in the States, but they do carry Volumax. If I think of anything else I'll come back. :)

Ah I was wondering about the Set Me Up gel, I saw it recommended on here but it seemed to have cones and I wondered if the formulation was changed. It's on sale at Shoppers right now so I might check it out again! And I do have a Sally's near by, it's actually near a salon that I'm going to soon so I will have a look there too. Thanks a bunch. :)

No problem. Yeah I heard about a new formulation months ago, but the last time I bought a tube in the summer it still had the old ingredients list. If you happen to run across it, I also highly recommend Biosilk Rock Hard Gellee. It's probably more than you want to spend, but I don't use it on its own, I use it in combination with a less hard hold gel, so it lasts quite a while.

HE Set Me Up was barely medium hold for my 3b graying hair. Sometimes I wonder if products perform differently on hair still having its natural color vs. graying hair.

Do you have access to LA Looks gels? The Sports Gel (LALSG as abbreviated on these boards) is the strongest hold drugstore brand I've tried.

ditto LA Looks Sport Gel if it's available there. It is CG. It does have some glycerine but way down on the ingredients list (my hair does not like glycerine but loves this gel). Very strong hold. My favorite gel for about 10 years now.

I've been trying to find that gel, but I have been unsuccessful. Are there any stores that sell it?

Thanks for the input! We don't have LA Looks in Canada (Or at least not where I live) but I might just go with the Equate brand gel!

Chatters salons sell the brhg, they might have a location near you. Amazon Canada also has it, their price is fairly similar to the salon price. You may have luck finding it at a Winners or Marshals, I've heard of people finding it there at a lower price but I never have. I've looked for the LA gels as well but have never seen them here.

There's no Chatters near me but I might just get it on Amazon the next time I order something enough to get free shipping (I order books all the time so that shouldn't be hard haha). Thanks :)

Got the Equate sport gel. Since I've never used the LA Looks gel, I can't compare, but so far it is decent. I wouldn't say that the hold is that strong but the results are the same as with my slightly pricier gel, my hair stays soft and shiny and it's easy to work with. I don't really like the fragrance though.
I didn't get a chance to go to Sally's, looks like I'll have to find myself some brhg.
I bought the Garnier pure clean gel on impulse- I liked the packaging. (The blue colour of the sport gel really made me hesitate). I'm scared to try it in this weather though because it looks like it has quite a bit of glycerin.
And I missed the sale for HE Set me up so I'll just wait till it goes on sale again, since I don't really need it.

I just read you have a Sally's - Volumax Mega is my go to hard hold gel; I really like it a lot. I can use in it any weather! I like it better than BRHG (I will eventually use it up...)

Antihumectant, it is CG as well, but has protein if that matters to your hair.
Smorgasbord of finer, porous 2a-3a; straight underlayer

    :thumbleft: collagen
 humectants outside of optimal dews, PVP, oils/butters, anything remotely comedogenic

poos: Giovanni TTT, WF365FF, Suave Clarifying
    condishes: VO5 VMT, KLS; IonEC
stylers: FSG, 4NSBCC, VolumaxMega, AIF, GFPC

Mod CG since 11/2012. My waves occasionally look best when combed out, so you can pry my combs from my cold, dead hands :laughing6:
