2A/2B newbie doesn't know where to start with product

Hi all,

I'm new to trying to really style my hair (outside of blowing it out straight) and to using much product. I've been playing with what I have and what I can borrow, which has been the less-than-ideal Herbal Essences CC, Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle Shampoo, regular conditioner (something from Tresemme), and a generic Pantene curl shaping gel. It's definitely not cone-free or any of that. I'm having trouble making the CC get my roots clean enough no matter how much I scrub, and they're greasy and gross again by midday. Prior to this, I was usually washing my scalp every/every other-ish day; when I've tried to go much longer between (which was basically all of high school for me) my hair has never acclimated well.

In general, my hair is (I think) either 2A or 2B with a whole range of textures that I never really know how to predict. It's pretty dry at the ends but grows quickly and is otherwise very healthy - no color, and aside from occasional (~every 2 weeks) blowdries, very little heat styling.

I want to start taking better care of it, but I'm not really sure where to start. Budget is an issue, too. How can I figure out what products to buy to try first? What's the cheapest way to do that? Are there good "starter" products to try and see? I live in NYC so I have pretty good access to most stores, though purchasing online is easiest.

Of the thumbnails I've attached, the two in the blue flannel are of my hair mostly dry with a fair amount of gel scrunched in - after that, the curls tend to sag by a few hours later. The others are with no product; as you can see, it ranges a lot (and I'm not always sure why). Sometimes, paticularly when dirty, it's a lot straighter and frizzier than pictured, but I don't have any clear pictures of that.

A lot of waives cannot co-wash. I can't. Or not much. I mostly use diluted sulfate. Like a table spoon to 4 oz water. I got an applicator bottle from Sally's and use Suave clarifying. I also like Kinky Curly Come Clean. Two good hard hold gels are Herbal Essence Set me Up or I like Volumax Mega gel from Sally's. Excellent clumper. Tressemme Radiant Volume is. A good cheap conditioner. You could use it as leave in too if you need it. Lots of waives like LA looks gels. I have used Sport and NutraCurl but I like the first two I mentioned better. Flax seed gel is cheap made at home and awesome. Lots of YouTube vids on that. Clipping and diffusing help tons. You can find links to vids in my signature and also my wavy blog. I hope some of this helps !!

PS You'll still want a hard hold gel over flax but flax seed gel makes good clumps is shiny and moisturizing. All these are very budget friendly.
