ammonia/peroxide what do they do?

i've been wondering this for awhile. doesn't one lift the color?i use some with no ammonia except the nuttrise which i HATE it lift the base lighter.

    ammonia usually is used to open the cuticle so the hair color can go in. I think a lot of companies have discontinued using ammonia and gone to other chemicals.

    Perioxide is used to lift color.

    There are some deposit only hair colors, such as Robert Craig hair, and demi-permanent or a semi-permanent colors, such as Natural Instincts or ColorSpa.
