Shopping mistakes

curlypearlcurlypearl Posts: 12,156Registered Users Curl Connoisseur
What have you bought that turned out to be a disaster?

I once bought a couch that had big stripes. I thought it would be zippy looking, you know, pizzazz. When I got it home the stripes walked up and down! Don't know how else to describe it. Hideous!!! Screechy. Oh, my eyes. I gave it away as soon as I could, for free. Horrifying because of the $$ I spent, but I was relieved. Someone else can wear sunglasses when they look at it.

So fess up your shopping mistakes. What have you bought that you had to give or throw away?

The first thing that comes to my mind are these shoes (that I actually posted about last fall). I bought the ankle boot version in black and LOVE them but these are truly hideous and impractical for me. $200 down the drain...am thinking of selling them on ebay, as I've worn them only two or three times.

    2320836-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

It's usually clothing/shoes...bc I buy a lot of clothing/shoes. The fact is, I have my own style and it has been consistent pretty much since 7 or 8th grade. If you look in my closet, you will see several versions of the same basic styles of things, again and again, usually in the same colors (black, gray, olive). But somethimes ppl get to me or I get dazzled by something that looks great on someone else but is totally not my style, buy it and have remorse right afterward. I need to just stick w/ what I know works for me. The above isn't exactly an example of that; I just didn't realize how ugly they'd be until I saw them in person.

I have had buyer's remorse over many hair products over the years...but i'm guessing that's par for the course for many curlies, esp the ones w/ the less common hair types. I usually give them to my kids or to friends, swap them or just throw them away bc I'm not willing to mess up my hair over an unfortunate mistake. I also sadly have about 5 sticks of deodorant that I do not like. It works, tho, so i'm just gonna tought it out. I can usually make make up products work, eben if I don't love them.

I don't usually regret purchasing furniture or home decor items. But I remember posting here in 2005 (with pics) about how I got this crazy idea of putting a border similar to this and red Italian-marble-looking wallpaper all over my kitchen. The feedback was almost unanimous and I had to get it taken down. A costly mistake.

Ha ha~! I didn't even think to include my buyer's remorse over the hair products I have bought and bought and bought! :banghead: (And thrown out). But that's covered in other threads.

I bought a beautiful maroon leather jacket on eBay. It was like a child's size eight. I got a good deal, so didn't ask to return it because the ad didn't say it was exceptionally small or a kids size and just gave it to a friend.

I once bought a $22 eye liner that I never wore more than once, but this is fairly typical. People raved about it online. It ran so badly I had raccoon eyes.
I bought some runnings shoes that were on sale for about $60. Turns out I have plantar fasciitis and needed to be fit for running shoes because you need more room in running shoes than regular shoes. So then I had to spend $100+ for new running shoes when the old ones are still shiny and new and unwearable. If it's really a lot of money that I've spent, I will try to convince myself it wasn't a waste. Like if I don't admit it to myself, it didn't happen.

My mistakes mostly involve clothes, shoes or hair products. I would say my biggest disasters with clothes were 2 t shirts I bought for friends in NY and a nice sweater I bought a few years ago. All fell apart as soon as they were washed. My friends threw their Ren & Stimpy shirts in the washer and the sleeves fell off.

I just had a recent one with Forever 21 and some jeggings. I don't know why I keep fooling with them sometimes when it comes to their bottoms. If it doesn't have an elastic waist I just need to avoid. Their bottoms tend to be low rise and I just can't do that cut. My butt/back comes out of them. So happy I only paid like $5 for them

I rarely have remorse. However, when I do, it's not a lot of money spent. It's usually on a cheap shirt or something similar.

I recently fell in love with and ordered a top that I thought would go great over leggings for me. I tried it on and looked totally shapeless in it so I returned it. I bought the leggings on an impulse buy because I figured I "should" own one pair of black leggings in my wardrobe. Still have the tags on them. Because I wanted just the right top to wear over them to cover my badonkadonk and thighs. Still on the hunt for a great top!

I am trying to be harder on myself with purchases -- asking myself do I totally LOVE how this item looks on me? And did I expect it to fit differently than it actually does? This has helped me return the items I'm really lukewarm about so that I have funds in my piggy bank when I like something better. ;)

It is usually clothes or shoes for me too, because that's basically what I buy the most of.

    Or hair products.

Sometimes I'll buy makeup that I end up hating on me, so I'll give it to my older sister.

I'm one of those people that agonize over purchases and if I do order it, I'll make sure to return it within the time frame. If not, it becomes a present for someone.

I've bought heaps of shoes online. It's rare that I have a problem, but I suspect I may have "easy feet": basic size and width. Plus if you stick with brands that have fit before, that makes it all the more easy.

I wouldn't do it if there weren't free returns...bc I do have problem feet.

I'm a Zappos VIP and they will send me out additional pairs right away if I call, even if I haven't sent the rejects back yet (but maybe they do that for everyone).

Ugh another shopping woe. I bought Jessicurl Rockin Ringlets because I used to really like it and used it today. My hair is hard as a rock, so I checked the ingredients....vegetable glycerin. Brand new bottle and I can't return it. Perfect dews today, too, but my hair just hates glycerin, I guess.

Oh damn, I bought makeup last week. My very expensive Estee Lauder foundation ran out and I thought I could try something out at Ulta. Well, I wound up buying the foundation, a face pallet with brightener, bronzer and blush, this concealer type stuff that gets the red out of your face and a brush for the foundation and concealer. It looked good when the sales associate tried it on me but I am just not getting the hang of it. I spent $166 in total because I didn't want to splurge on my $85 Estee Lauder foundation which actually works for me. I'm going to see if they'll take it all back. I didn't even want all the other crap anyway, just the foundation. So disappointing.

ETA: Yay! Ulta has a good return policy. I am returning it this weekend and then logging on to Nordstrom's to order my Estee Lauder foundation.
