Hi
Haven't posted for a while, went through a period of straightening.
Anyhoo :toothy8: back on the wagon and could do with some help.
Grey hair, coarse texture high porosity, strands break easily.
What could you advise for shine and hold, can get some lovely ringlets now that my hair is a bit longer.
Presently using sulphate free shampoo, Honeysuckle rose conditioner or Tresemme natural conditioner and using it as a leave in. Have just bought some Boots Curl Creme.
Also any natural treatments that might help combat frizz and dullness? Thank you :o
Still experimenting!
Hair 2c+3a?
Mainly coarse and porous.

Since you have hair porosity hair, you can benefit from protein, although may or may not be all types.

Oil treatment is a very good one, too. You can use it as pre-wash treatment, sealer or mix it with a conditioner as DT or to a homemade LI or styler blend.

Great recipes for both can be found at Science-y Hair blog. Wendy has amazing recipes for everything. I'm loving her Oil Blend (leaving out the butter because it tends to weigh my hair down) but I'm going to experiment with Holland & Barrett Wonder Oil mixed with coconut oil once I run out of my blend.

I've also found homemade gels work amazing to impart shine on hair, other than moisturizing, enhancing curls and taming frizz. Many curlies here love flaxseed, but I found okra works much better for me, although I'm still perfecting my recipe slowly, adding more ingredient one at a time.

Clarify: Suave Daily Clarifying Shampoo, Citric acid rinse
RO/LI: Jason Moisturizing 84% Aloe Vera / Paul Mitchell The Conditioner
Styler: DIY Okra Jelly / Paul Mitchell Thicken Up / Shu Uemura Cotton Uzu Flexible Defining Cream
    Treatment: H&B Wonder Oil + VCO, Honey-Cardamom-EVOO-Chamomile

Thank you for response. I have some old coconut oil no longer edible so could use that for treatments. I am too lazy to make my own gel :-) and hope someone can recommend something that has the same results without the work!!

I recently acquired Garnier Frictis Endurance 24H Gel and I've been liking it so far. It enhances the curl, although doesn't promote clumps enough for me as much as flaxseed and okra, and have quite decent hold. When I talk about clumps, I mean real clumps that you can really count how many there are on my head. So actually the gel is pretty good.
It also imparts shine and it doesn't dry crunchy.

Okay, so as a UK gal myself these are the things I've been able to get easily (and cheapily) that have worked:

Sulfate-free shampoo: ElastaQP Creme Conditioning Shampoo (am Amazon for a few quid). This is gentle, but also cleansing.

Conditioner: ORS Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner (Boots, for about a fiver). Have used this a few times now and really like it - leaves my hair very soft and smells like lemons!

Deep conditioning: Giovanni 2chic Avocado & Olive Oil Ultra Moist Mask (Boots, for about £8. Or Amazon for slightly cheaper). A decent deep conditioner with great slip. Wouldn't say it's the most amazing thing ever, but it's done me well so far!
You can also just make your own with things like honey, coconut oil, banana, avocado etc. There are loads of recipes online. Or just add some of those extras to this DC to give it an extra boost.

Leave-in: I was using the My DNA (Amazon), but that's gone up quite a bit in price now, so I've been using some of my leftover Faith in Nature rinse-out conditioners as leave-ins. They're not thick at all and have been working really well (and they're only £6 on Amazon)

Gel: Umberto Giannini Curl Friends Scrunching jelly (Boots, for a couple of pound). Cheap and cheerful and does a good job of defining my curls and getting rid of frizzies.
3B. Med porosity. Med thickness. Med density.

    LP: Shea Moisture (currently JBCO)
    Conditioner/CW: Jason Aloe Vera

LI: Aunt Jackie's Curls & Coils Quench
Refreshing: TRESemmé Naturals Aloe Vera & Avocado
    Gel: DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel
    DC:
Aunt Jackie's Soft & Sassy Super Duper Softening Conditioner
    Treatments: Coconut oil/Coconut milk

UK curly. CG since Oct 2013.

The Body Shop Banana Conditioner also works really well on me. I use as RO and LI. I can use it to cowash as well, but Suave is cheaper and I love the fragrance, so I can use it with abandon and makes my hair smells nice at the same time.

And if you're too lazy to mix your own oil blend, as I mentioned before, Holland & Barrett has Wonder Oil that has quite a good mix of oils. You can add coconut oil to it. My measurement is 1:3 coconut oil to Wonder Oil.
