Best Cheap Hair Products?

in Hair Type 4
I'm a curly teen on a low budget. I have 4b/c low porosity hair that adores protein.
I wanted to try Pantene for naturals or Ossat Naturals, which are in my price range, but the ingredients seem...bleh.
Right now I'm using Faith in Nature Jojoba products and they're just not moisturising enough. I've also tried Herbal Essences and Creme of Nature but my hair hated the conditioners.
1. Are there any...'not very expensive' hair products out there?
2. Am I going to have to raise my budget to stay natural? :pale:
3. Is Shea Moisture worth the investment? (would take a months savings to get shampoo, condish and deep condish)
p.s. It takes me 2+ months to finish hair products so maybe an investment will be worth it?
URGH natural hair is stress sometimes :angry4: Please Help? Thanks

- Grapeseed Oil
- Olive Oil (cheapest)
All of these products (except the oils) are under $11. So they're definitely affordable, especially for the great quality of them.
2.) You won't need to raise your budget. There are a lot of naturals (including myself) who have a tight budget and can't afford to spend $50 on products. A lot of the time you can even make DIY conditioner and hair treatments that end up being cheaper than actual products. You just have to do some research (:
3.) I believe that Shea Moisture products are great (some better than others). My favorites are from the Coconut & Hibiscus line. Compared to many of the other natural hair care brands, they're one of the cheapest. So their products are definitely worth looking into.
For me, all of my products last at least 5 months. So if you're investing in something pricey and you're on a budget, just make sure that it'll actually last a while so you aren't spending so much money in a short period of time.
You can also try making your own. I like flax seed gel which is super cheap to make. I have also made leave in conditioners and deep conditioners using basic ingredients like tea, honey, banana, oils ect. I don't even remember the last time I bought a product labeled as a deep conditioner.

You will need to read the ingredients of the normal conditioners before you purchase them as one conditioner under the same brand may do while another will not.

Some of the conditioners if you pick up the wrong version with a similar sounding name will have silicones in.
So when you pick up a product have a quick check.
You especially need to do this if the product says "new formula" or similar.
They are listed because not everyone follows the curly girl method and many that do often tweak it. Some curlies like silicones, sulfates, mineral oils, and other "non-curly girl" ingredients which may or may not be found in some of the products listed above.

Growing my hair to WL when dry :thumright:
My other advice, and this is a hard one, but avoid becoming a product junkie. It's so tempting to try everything. but try one thing, use it a couple weeks and go from there. There is no need to buy everything at once. I also don't know if I would go and buy everything from one line. Try one product, see if you like it and them move to the next product. I like SheaMoisture but there were too many other less expensive products out there (Cantu for example) for me to go out and buy everthing from them.
Going natural is a journey. It's a marathon, not a sprint. Don't break the budget
Also check out the product swap board and find a friend so you can try products together and cut down on your costs until you figure out what your hair likes.
SHAMPOO
Apricot Black soap bar (I get mine from the BBS and it last FOREVER and it's the only thing I use that doesn't make my hair a tangles mess) ($3)
CONDISH
vo5 Kiwi Lime ($1)
Cantu leave-in ($5)
STYLE
Fruit of the Earth Aloe Vera gel ($4). Also can't say enough about this one. If they ever stop making this stuff, I'm just going to go bald, LOL

1. Yes, truthfully you are going to have to raise your hair-care budget, but not for the things you expect (like all the fun products), but for all the stuff you will need accessory -wise (hard-hooded table top dryer, clips, diffuser, conditioner caps, wide tooth combs, turbans, flexi rods, etc.--all great investments, btw., but it can be a little shocking when you add up the expense of the initial costs).
2. Some things you can get away with like eco-styler gel or inexpensive conditioners such as tresemme naturals or trader joe's or Aubrey organics and even suave naturals is fine, but nothing beats a great yogurt conditioner or clay-rinse--and they are all reasonably priced to boot.
3. Give yourself time to reap the benefits of your new regimen (I am a flip-flopper, but it got much better when I accepted that I am just one of those people).
4. I hear that SheaMoisture is a nice product, although I now like making my own butters and things (I buy in bulk from .. FromNatureWithLove.com or MountainRoseHerbs.com)
5. Fun webitses that might help:
