Returned to Dickey

Dickey gave me a great cut again! I think he is a better stylist than anyone else I've seen in NYC - and I think I've seen them all.

I got a dreadful haircut from someone else recently and I couldn't make it work no matter how hard I tried. I fried my hair with heat tools trying to deal with it. It looked worse than it's looked in years.

My hair is 2c/3a. One thing that Dickey does differently from others is that he doesn't twirl my hair or rake and shake. He makes sure the hair is dripping wet and applies mousse. Then he just places it gently with a wide tooth comb - not combing it, just lifting it in places.

The salon is bright and airy and the staff was very pleasant to me. The shampoo is a cleansing cream - totally cg, no sulfates.

I'm so relieved that my hair looks pretty again. I will return when it grows out. I got a 20% discount because I'm a senior citizen but the staff teased me that I looked like a teenager. The haircut definitely took years off - not quite to the teen years but youthful. I'm very pleased with it. :blob7:
2/c Coarse hair med. density.
Highly porous. Color over grey.
I love all the Curl Junkie products. Still experimenting with gels and curl creams. Still hoping for 2nd day hair....
Every day is a gift :flower:

I am so glad to hear how well things went. As, i am sure that your curls look amazing! Also, i am sure that the staff wasn't teasing about your looking like a teenager. As, i am sure that you are a youthful looking beauty already.

I cannot speak for everyone of course, but i have never actually heard anything negative about Anthony Dickey and the way that he cares for, styles, and cuts individuals' curly hair. I only wish that there was a stylist around like him in my area that I could go to. Then I would actually start going back to the salon again.

Did something happen that caused you to try a cut with someone else? I think I remember you raving about how good he was in the past, so I was wondering why you went to someone else. :)

Good question! It's a little hard to explain. I had very serious brain surgery almost 5 years ago a few blocks from where Dickey's salon is. I feel really creepy going back to that area.

It may be difficult to understand if you haven't had a truly life altering experience. I try to avoid the area, because it makes me remember a lot. The surgery is something I am aware of many times every day because it permanently affected certain things but to go near where it happened is a bit like having a nightmare. Sorry if this sounds very melodramatic - I don't know how else to describe it. Although I avoid the area as much as possible, at the same time I feel drawn to it. I think this is a kind of PTSD.

The salon is very bright and cheery which helps and I didn't linger in the neighborhood afterward. I'm sure in time it won't affect me that way at all.

Sorry I double posted. It's a combination of both answers. I was hesitant about telling the second reason.

I'm sorry CP. :( And I'm sorry if my question brought up bad memories. :(

JLeighs, your question was fine and it is so sweet of you to respond as you did. I felt embarrassed after I wrote the response but your input made it all right again!

I'm actually feeling very happy now. Many good things in my life these days including this new cute haircut.

I hope you are doing well - and thanks again for your kind response! :love7:

I'm glad there are good things in your life these days. :)

I'm doing well! I scheduled my first ever Deva Cut for mid-August and I'm hoping it turns out. She is a "Deva Inspired Advanced Stylist" (no, I'm not exactly sure what that means...), and she has good reviews for the Deva cut on Yelp, etc. Honestly, anything would be an improvement over my last cut. I seriously almost start laughing every time I look at my hair when it's down (thank goodness for cute summer updos!). What on earth was my now ex-stylist thinking?! I've been with him for 5 years, and at my first appointment he said he wanted to see it longer. If you want to see it longer, then why.do.you.keep.cutting.it.all.off?? Enough already. I'm over it now lol.

So, I have high hopes for this cut. I'll lose even more length, but hopefully I can get a good shape and then be able to baby my hair enough to grow it out. Unfortunately, I have incredibly fragile hair. *sigh*

JL -- hope your deva cut comes out great! when i saw yelp in your research, i feel i need to tell you what i just learned in the past months from a friend whose family has a restaurant. apparently the business owner (i.e., the salon or the stylist i guess) must pay an ongoing fee to be able to get reviews..... not remembering exactly how she said it works, but the bottom line is that the person pays for these reviews. not to say they aren't genuine, but makes me not use yelp anymore. what do the reviews on here, nc, say?

cp -- i am sending you a pm.

cp -- i just noticed that you use cj strengthening conditioner which has protein and is recommended for those whose hair loves protein. in fact, it is the only cj conditioner i cannot use. you wrote that your hair is coarse and does not like protein. maybe this conditioner is not the right one? or maybe it is just giving your hair the amount it needs?

Rbb, I just noticed your post. Thank you for weighing in! I find that I can use the Strengthening conditioner. What I can't use much is the Repair Me which is stronger. I don't use the Strengthening Conditioner all of the time.

I'm disappointed in my hair today. Parts curled terrifically and other parts barely curled at all. I think I have to do more twerling or rake/shake - something! Anyway, I appreciate that you posted. :flower:

Hi all, read your info on Dickey, Carlos and Deva -- I have question -- have any of you gone to Christo? Alice? Need help badly.

I have just (okay 2 mos ago) had a horrid situation. Women who colors my hair, cut my hair two years ago. It was way too short at that time, but after 6 mos -- started to grow in great and after two years, totally needed a cut (it was super long but I never looked better).

So, I book a haircut with her on 4/8 -- told her I want a trim, and not as short as last time. She admonishes me for no cut in 2 years, tells me I have breakage in back and then cut 2.5 inches off the back and straight across (that's a lot for a 3b/c curly hair person). BUT.... she left sides and front as is. So... sides are longer than back. When asked why, she told me I would not be able to handle it short. Told me to wait til back grows more and charged for 1/2 a haircut. Insane.

Fast forward 2 mos -- this week when I went for color (she's also colorist) I asked when I could cut rest of my hair. Bottom line, she told I stress her out and to go elsewhere. I have no clue where to go now... I used to go to Ouidad years ago until Ouidad herself botched my hair. Now I have to cut to that short back layer. I met with Alice, but don't know anyone who has gone to her -- any feedback. Thanks so much.
