Is flax seed gel protein-sensitive compatible?

After a bad experience with eco styler gel I eventually came to the realization that my low porosity 4a/b hair was protein sensitive.:( Since I'd read so much about the popularity of flax seed gel amongst curlies I decided to give it a try. Before making the gel however, I did some looking into the protein content of flax seeds and found that they contain 1.6 grams of protein per tbsp.

In the past certain proteins in small doses have not had an adverse effect on my hair ( such as the silk protein in Shea Moisture's curl enhancing smoothie). I also noticed while browsing through this forum that different protein sensitive heads are more sensitive than others when it comes to certain ingredients. So far I haven't noticed any problems with aloe vera or coconut oil either.

So my main question (after much rambling) is: Has anyone else with protein sensitivity had any problems with flax seed gel? If you could also mention how much you liked it, how sensitive to protein you are, and whether or not you would recommend that I use it would be very helpful.

As always, I appreciate the advice/insight. :)

My hair is medium coarse, and it likes some proteins fine while reacting badly if I use others too frequently. It responds well to silk for instance, but only reacts well to keratin if I use it infrequently. My hair loves fsg. My logic is that though flax seeds are a source of protein, the process of making the gel doesn't extract any real protein benefit from the seeds. The protein stays with the discarded seeds instead of in the gel. This is just my experience, and I'm not someone whose hair reacts to substances that help the hair retain protein the way some sensitive hair does.

Hm, I hadn't thought about that. My hair reacts similarly to keratin as well. Thanks for your answer, it was very insightful. :)

I'm in the process of learning all the do's and don'ts in curly hair care and I'm currently living in Asia. To top it off, there is no way of shipping to the country I live in soooo that means a lot of DIYing. That being said I have to make my own hair care products. Fortunately I have access to flaxseeds so it's my only hair styler for now until I go back to the States and bring a butt load of products back with me. I've been using the gel for three weeks and so far so good. I would say I have coarse 3b/c high porosity hair. So I'm definitely on the protein sensitive side. But as I said, so far so good. I'm sure I would have noticed any straw like changes and breakage by now. Hope this helps.

Hi. I seem to get lots of frizz and very dry, straw-like hair that flash dries when I use protein. The exception is silk protein and maybe amino acids. My hair also hates aloe. I'm using Curly & Kind flaxseed gel and my hair drinks it right up! That can't be bad, can it?
