Staying Grey

CasslrCasslr Posts: 34Registered Users
I'm sure some of you have noticed my posts about going grey at a young age (I'm 24). While it doesn't translate on camera too well because it's very mixed in my hair, lately a TON of comments have been made. I'm still trying to accept the grey, but it was getting a little rough these past two weeks.

Without sounding paranoid, I think I'll be mostly grey by the time I was 30 if it keeps up at this rate. I'm also worried I'll get bored of it after I'm at 100% since I am pretty much against coloring it.

What would you think if you passed by someone who was fully grey at 30?
What would you have done (or what HAVE you done) in my position?

I think gray hair on younger people can be very striking. On some of us it can look very drab however - like so many things it depends on the individual. I think it's particularly important for you to get a chic and stylish haircut if you're going gray.
You ask what others would have done in your position. I'm one of those people who look mousy with gray hair. I wouldn't have felt great about my appearance if I was gray at your age. But I have a dear friend who went gray when quite young and on her it has always looked stunning, because of her coloring and because she carries herself with confidence. Even so, she has gone through periods when she colored her hair because she wanted to try a different look.
It's not surprising that you seem ambivalent about going gray - our society generally disdains signs of aging! Maybe go easier on yourself - if you want to give it a try, do it. But don't beat yourself up if you decide you're not comfortable with it and want to color your hair. Good luck!

My grandmother had a beautiful grey/white streak in her 30's that I wanted so bad.
I would have let my grey flag fly if I had gone grey at a young age.

Fake it till you make it(confidence that is). I think gray hair on a young person is striking also. I had my first negative comment on my gray hair this week also and I'm 42 I personally don't care what others think. Just shows how close minded they are.

Thanks Ladies! I'm generally pretty confident in my decision to let the grey grow, but even many small pebbles thrown can still make a dent. My grandmother, who didn't show a sign of grey until about 70 years young, is really supportive of my decision to stop coloring my hair.

I am inspired by the great color I've found on this forum and hoping to only be half as confident as you Beauties!!

i started greying at 17. you would see it if you were standing face to face with me. by 40 i had lots of salt/pepper going on around my face. my father greyed early, too. my daughter is following in our footsteps and has opted not to color. my daughter is a teacher and a 3rd grade student came up to her one day and said, "i see you put lights in your hair. i like it!" LOL! i think he meant highlights, but you know the saying, "out of the mouths of babes...."

i think salt/pepper/grey hair is very flattering on a young face!
as someone else said, it is important to have your haircut in a style that is flattering to you.

    have fun with your grey!

Quite honestly, I think people with good skin and grey hair look stunning.

I'm not that much older than you and I'm going grey too. I have very dark brown hair and I do occasionally henna my hair. I don't color my hair to cover the grey. I'm going to let it grow out now because it's who I am and I just don't care what other people think. I have a friend who is about 6 months older than me and she is already over 50% grey. She lets it go natural and I think she looks great. Honestly the closer you get to 30 the less you care what people think (at least that's what I feel and what have observed in my friends).

I HIGHLY recommend the silver sisters gray cafe board. Google Silver Sisters Gray Cafe and the message board will come up. I frequent this board for curly hair info (I do have the CG book too) but I can not do without the support from the silver sisters. I mean look at my avi, where else can you post a progress pic and be told you look beautiful (with a head full of two toned hair!
My background story is that I am now 67 but my natural dark brown hair started getting its first gray strands at 24 also. I dyed it but could tell I was completely gray by 30. Continued to dye it all these years. But hey, I am now really old enough to have gray hair so it is (too slowly) growing in. If you continue to dye, you have to do it every 2 weeks, it never really looks good and mine was beginning to fall out and get thinner. There are a good number of people that develop an allergy to PPD that is in hair color and in some cases has led to death.
Come to Cafe Gray and get the support to learn to accept your gray hair to be you!
Have to say tho rbb, that your siggy line pic is an inspiration to me too, would love to see you post that pic on Cafe Gray and wow the group.

Poo: Have to admit I have recently become a Wen convert. Love it. I have always had problems with my hair "hanging" right, curling uniformly and destorting the perimeter line. Wen makes it hang evenly.

thanks, curly! you know i forgot about the cafe gray. when i was transitioning it was an open website, same name as her book, goinggraylookinggreat.com, and it was definitely an inspiration to me. helpful with hairstyles while i was transitioning, and good tips on color of clothes, makeup....
i did sign up for cafe gray a couple of years back but for some reason could not get back on. i should start fresh. the one problem is that while some of them have curly hair, they do not address curly. and for me, i think curly is primary, but of course we have different hair issues as gray.

Yeah, try again, rbb, the goinggraylookinggreat was the old site and before my time. But you wont have any trouble signing up, Diana, the owner says she monitors requests a couple of times a day. Unfortunately, you cannot view as just a guest.
Most are not curly but alot are. I get my curly fix and mega info on that here but cannot do without cafe gray.
