Melting waves! :-(

My waves melted away today, and I'm absolutely mystified! :sad1: Hope someone can help.

The details:
I have thick, coarse 2b hair. I cowashed and styled as normal. I used my regular products, which seem to work well, and I used my normal amount of product.

After styling, my hair looked better than it usually does. I had bouncy, well-defined waves and decent volume.

After my hair dried, the waves elongated and lost volume. It looked pretty blah. I noticed that my hair didn't get a gel cast today even though I used the normal amount of gel.

I also noticed the my hair is softer than normal. Pretty sure I didn't over-condition, though. The weirdest thing is that it was a bit humid today, but my hair didn't frizz up.

Any idea what might've caused the mysterious melting waves?

I have no idea, but it's funny because this happened to me today as well. I was surprised. My plan is to see if it happens again next time I wash or if it was just a fluke, and go from there.

Sorry to hear that! ... Although it's comforting to know it happens to others as well. Since I'm a newbie, I usually assume I've screwed something up again!

Sounds like you may be over-conditioned or needing protein.

My hair loves protein, plopping, and diffusing! Trying to find a way to style and air dry.

I'm still trying to figure out the whole moisture/protein balance. Generally, my hair seems to need moisture more than protein.

Can your hair become over-conditioned if you're just using your normal amount?

I'm a bit scared of doing a protein treatment! The last two times my hair got super hard and dry, and I lost a TON of hair.

One was an accidental gelatin treatment. There was "slime" at a youth group event. I guess it must've had gelatin in it because it made my hair VERY hard and dry.

The other was a diy hair mask. I used the dump method, but it was something like:
    -1 medium avocado
    -2-3 T honey
    -2 T mayo

My hair also got very hard and dry, and I lost a ton of hair. It seemed like a very extreme reaction to the small amount of protein.

    Wow. Yeah that seems extreme.
