Computer security

I am getting annoying popups and "announcements" on my home computer. Every site I go to says "Congratulations!!! you have been selected blah blah" I ignore it. Also getting popups saying my computer has a virus and all my passwords, etc. are at risk so I should call ### which I'm sure is also bogus.

I have Anti Virus installed. Is there anything else I should do that doesn't cost additional to stop all this? Meanwhile, I am just ignoring it, on the theory that eventually they will give up. May all their teeth rot.

Download this program. Run the quick scan, should take 20-30 minutes. If you have anything, this will find it!

Several of my friends are getting calls on their home phones saying, this is blah blah and we are getting several security warnings from your PC for Windows. My friends just keep messing with them. I don't have Windows. If they call again and mention something else, I don't have that either :) Pain in the butt! Some have received 5 calls this week. On top of that someone is also calling people, giving the name of a family member, saying it's a collect call from jail, and asking them to press *72. That will forward your calls to them and they can rack up a long distance bill.

Buy a phone card, --- hat!

Its a really good program and seems to get the bigger virus's as soon as they hit. I use it on my laptop, got my Dad using it on his and have it running on all of our office computers. No issues since.

If you're still having any issues, you can run the full scan (it'll take about 24 hours, and you can just let it run in the back ground) but I've only ever had to do that once with a friends computer and it was a really bad virus.

There were two similar ones going around here about 6 months ago. One locked you out of your computer with a message saying the RCMP (our FBI) had detected porn on your computer. You needed to buy a $100 prepaid CC and enter the number to have your computer unlocked. Supposedly it would just keep asking for more money. That was the one I did the full scan on in safe mode, it was awful getting around.

The other is a call from "Microsoft". They tell you, you have a virus and they need into your computer to fix it. I've had a couple of older clients call really worked up over it.

Some people are just awful :(

We had the porn one a year or two ago. I kept getting calls about it at work. People would freak out and think the FBI was after them. *I would not know it if they were, 99% of the time. :) The FBI doesn't report to us. That is for sure.

I tried CC's suggestion but my computer just seemed to go into a tailspin, so I brought it to Best Buy since I have a protection program there. The main said he can fix it, so I'm relieved. Thanks anyway, CC!

I really prefer the MAC. I never had problems with it. I have to use the PC for work but the minute I resign I'm going back to the MAC.

Thanks for all your input! (I'm trying to add the flower emoticon here but it doesn't work. Must be something in the settings. So everyone who answered, here's a virtual bouquet.
