Crunchy hair

What causes the crunch? Is it an ingredient, too much product, or something?
Can you recommend any good "non-crunch" products?

The crunch is caused by a gel cast - which holds the curl in place and protects it from the outside elements. You can try to SOTC (scrunch out the crunch) by holding pieces of hair and gently pushing them towards the scalp.

As far as non-crunch products, I'm no help.

The Eco Styler Krystal gel doesn't give me crunch. Maybe a tiny bit around my crown but usually no crunch at all. I've heard some people on threads saying that the eco styler made their hair extremely crunchy though so I don't know. I always use it on dripping wet hair after some LI and a sealer so maybe if I was putting it directly onto hair it would be more crunchy.

If your gel is causing crunch you may want to try applying it to dripping wet hair and/or applying it over a LI and/or oil (if you don't do that stuff already!).

ETA: Some people say that protein makes their hair "crunchy" or "straw like." So if your crunch is NOT related to a gel that may be your problem. If it is then you just need to restore the moisture/protein balance. A deep conditioning treatment would probably help with that.

Leaving in more conditioner and using less gel can also reduce crunch. My hair is usually easier to SOTC when I use a regular rinse-out conditioner as a leave-in compared to a product named "leave-in".

I definitely agree that the gel cast is a good thing, a super important thing, but if you SOTC and the crunch doesn't actually go away, try leaving in more conditioner next time.

And yeah--if you have crunch and you didn't use gel, your hair is dry, dry, dry. Try rinsing your hair and applying conditioner more often.

Thanks all. I guess I went a little heavy handed on the SM Soufflé lol. I just got so excited with a new product 😄

I have found too, when using an oil, the 'crunch' decreases once dried.

The SM Souffle gave me a crunch that I couldn't scrunch out. I don't like it. The Curl Enhancing Smoothie gives me a crunch as well, but it is easy to scrunch out.

The more crunch I have the better because I need to SOTC. My hair will get frizzy in a second if I fluff out too much.
